I just rescued a carboy full of, supposedly, wine from my parent's old garage. I think they said it had been in there for at least 6 years. Looks fairly purple.

No climate control, so it has been sweltering in the summer and freezing in the winter. There was a water lock on it, but obviously it was evaporated dry. As I was sloshing it around carrying it it actually did smell winey when I caught some fumes out of the lock, not so much vinegary as I expected.

What should I expect, you think? I reckon this is the sort of thread that needs pics and hospital records after I taste it.

1) I'd taste it.
2) Then I'd dump it.

I don't like wine, but that batch has to be especially terrible by now.

I'm not sure how I am going to get the bung out. Pushed down pretty far, actually pushed past the neck.

Wonder if I have a toggle bolt in the basement.

Got it out. No toggle bolts handy, tried a wall anchor. Rubber bung wouldn't hold it. Then I just used a long screwdriver and pried it up.

It actually smells like wine.

Will taste it soon....... if it is drinkable I will have to fill a bunch of mason jars, heh.

Interestingly, it is somewhere in the fortified wine/brandy neighborhood. Peeps at the bar found it surprisingly drinkable.

Peeps who will drink at lunch.

But still.

Oh, and their best guess is that it sat in that garage for 10 years.

We tried having a glass with dinner tonight.... it tastes good, but it is so strong that it pretty much feels like it should be in the liquor class, not in the "have a glass with dinner" class.

Sheesh.

Oh, And I have a half gallon of it, and my Mom has almost 4 gallons of it. Heh. Might be a fun Christmas between that and the holiday beer I am going to brew.
