I've always seen truth in this.

A lot of things could also be considered slavery, as well, if you don't specifically specify "American negros, 1500-1860." Since that is the only time and place in history that capital-S Slavery happened.

For example, to buy stuff, you need to work. You could break down most purchases as "I had to work X number of hours to afford that bicycle." Then some scum steals your bike. So essentially, they stole X hours of your labor. Which means you worked for them, for free, against your will. Slavery.
