I would like to reintroduce my "save yourself and your kids" apartment blocks where you voluntarily give up some freedoms, in order to live without crime, squalor, hunger, and have the ability to raise your kids right and break the cycle of poverty.... idea.

I do not recall this idea. Break it down.

It's something I posted a long time ago. The idea of trying to find it wearies me.

You sign up for this. You get an apartment commiserate with how many kids you have. You go on birth control. Common area in your apartment is monitored 24/7 (bedrooms/bathrooms not). Hallways, courtyards, entrances/exits monitored by people with guns. No blind corners. No unwatched doors. Residents are treated with kindness and respect. Visitors, logged and tracked, treated with mistrust.

Your family, if you cannot afford your own, will be given nutritious food.... but nothing processed. You will be taught to cook/prepare this stuff if you don't know how.

Crime is not tolerated. All children will attend school, bullying/disruptions not tolerated. No recreational drugs, period. Theft is impossible, you're watched at all times in common areas. Public shaming/punishment for adults, harsh discipline for children. The criminally willful will be broken, with hugs so hard they hurt.

One day a month you are assigned community service, landscaping, sweeping, etc. You will have ownership of your community.

One day a month you will teach, or learn, a skill you may have, or one of your neighbors has. Cooking asian, gardening, sewing a rip in a shirt.

Cycle of violence, violent neighborhoods, will be broken in a generation. The current way clearly isn't working.

And you may leave any time you like, you're not a prisoner there. But you can't come back.

Interesting. I think it needs some tweaks, but I am firmly in favor of programs that force action rather than just collecting a check.

Broadly a shift towards conservatism - seeing it in California ballot measures - that the people vote on.

Two big ones this year, 1) Require incarcerated persons to work in prison,
AND
2) Making theft and property crime penalties more severe

Both appear to have passed. At least I was with the majority on something this year :)

There was small campaign $$$ for either - don't think I saw any ads, they just happened.

*CA voters directly reaffirmed gay marriage into the constitution, but I thought we had before I got here?

Typo? You mean incarcerated?

The soft on crime stuff isn't popular with any voting block...except criminals.

I feel like the Dems generally are soft on crime. "Everyone deserves a second chance. We can fix them. They are people too. Hugs, not cells. (Ok, I made that one up)" etc. And I don't know if they genuinely feel that way, or because the Repubs hate criminals, the Dems have to love them.

I would tend to agree, but cancel culture is a direct contradiction to that.

They would be earning their keep. They get housed. They get fed. Pay for it.

Can confirm Troy lives in the Green.

The graphic is more right than wrong but brutally and funnily blurs some of the decent inland cities, like most of tech hub San Jose, and rich & republican Orange County, as meth.

Also the yellow shading suggests that isn't one of the coolest trips you've ever been on. Lake Tahoe stands alone out here giving the map the finger.
