I'm starting to wonder if the gold keys aren't ruining the game. They sure do make it easy. We hardly ever die. When we do, it's because of a map glitch that makes you fall, or we wander way off by ourselves where no one can save us. And we wander freely because we have such OP weapons that it's rare we find something we can't kill.
It's a fun game, but there's zero challenge.

I got four shitty keys in a row last night. I'd say maybe 20-25% have an item of real usefulness. Everything else is cash fodder.
Its cause your still in playthrough one!
Not to put too fine a point on it, but yes. The guns and enemies all key off your level. When you cap out at 50, then NPCs catch up a bit. Coupling that with TVH mode will make things more interesting than they are now, but a solid 4-man team should be able to overcome all but the zergiest of gankings.
EDIT: Let's also not forget the badass points we spend. We can theoretically switch those off.

Exactly.
Not to mention he's got three allies who keep him alive.
Think about this Cake: How many times have you been in "Fight for your life" mode during our playthrough? It's been quite a lot huh? Of those times, how many times were you revived by a teammate or shot with Gordo's healing ability?
The first playthrough is essentially "easy mode". Plus, we've stayed ahead of the difficulty curve with weapons from the gold chest, because we're hitting ALL the side missions, and are constantly off course killing folks just for the fights (gaining XP we wouldn't if we stayed on track).
Want to see how the difficulty curve works? I can use Axton to go through one of the DLCs and gain about 2-3 levels on you, then we can resume play as normal. You'll find yourself outclassed by the enemies pretty quickly. Or I can take you into my lvl 34 Mechromancer's game and to one of her missions that are listed as "Impossible" where I shoot lvl 51 enemies with rocket launchers and only do 20 damage to them.
Four guys at levels above the enemy, holding weapons that are leveled above the enemy, a turret, all the bonuses we're receiving from our badass points, and group bonuses from our class mods and relics can make for some easy fights, yet we're still always in "Fight for your life" mode...
Maybe when we get on tonight, we can all try an evening with our badass points disabled and see if that makes a bit of a difference?
When we get done with this playthrough, run through the game again solo. I know you don't think the game is designed for that, but it is, and you'll be amazed at how much stuff you missed during our playthrough. Gordo has talked about that in our games. You don't hear half the things that are said because of all the shooting and people talking in your ear.

Interesting shyte about Goliaths...
Goliaths start out leveled to their area and can level up four times from their starting level. Once their helmet is shot off they become a "Raging Goliath" (or similar variance depending on the initial type). When they kill one target they become a "Badass Goliath"; two more kills, a "Super Badass Goliath"; three more kills, an "Ultimate Badass Goliath". After four more kills it levels to a "Fatal GOD-liath" (if the goliath started as a badass goliath it will be a "hulking mass of destruction" after leveling from an ultimate and will still have to level up one more time to reach its max) and killing this will unlock the Goliath, Meet David achievement. Much like players, Goliaths that level up have their health completely restored.
Lv.1 - Goliath ... initial
Lv.2 - Raging Goliath ... after helmet shot off
Lv.3 - Badass Goliath ... after 1 kill
Lv.4 - Super Badass Goliath ... after 3 total kills
Lv.5 - Ultimate Badass Goliath ... after 6 total kills ... unlocks David/Goliath achivement
Lv.6 - GOD-liath ... after 10 total kills
Speculation is evolution for varkids may be random, or influenced by combat, or influenced by the number of other varkids around. Taking out varkid pods means more XP than letting the evolved form out. On the flip side, letting them evolve high enough means better loot. In other news, that chubby varkid was ran across last night in the Caustic Caverns is a unique critter with a chance to drop a legendary launcher or shield.

I have a problem with the claim that more people = better loot.
My Mechromancer sees "Chubby" versions of different beasties a lot, and they always drop loot. I saw 3-4 chubby varkids and I know I've seen 3 chubby Raks.
She also seemed to have much better weapons than we did at the same lvl/spot in the game.

Switching those on/off might not make the biggest difference to us. I do notice it with my low level Axton. 5% to him means a lot more than 5% to us.
The only time I remember us getting our asses beat was the arena fight where everyone except me was sniping from the rafters. Hell, even that was only because it wouldn't let you back in.

We can all check the one challenge about reviving downed teammates and sum our numbers. But mine's near 70s, I think.
...you'll be amazed at how much stuff you missed during our playthrough
We're actively trying to hit all the sidequests, I assume, while leaving challenges and achievements partially complete. Anyone want me to cross-check with the wiki and see if we're missing missions?

Randy Pitchford just tweeted:
We are working on a big add-on/expansion for next year with deeper progression. I will share details and timing as we settle in with them.
And this:

Start with disabling bad ass points. If that's not enough then we unequip our mods and relics. Hell, we could reset our skill points and reassign only enough to use our "ult". No other bonuses. I'll bet all that would offset the purple weapons...

No, I'm sure we'll hit most missions. I was referring more to all the details and dialogue of the story. Even atmosphere stuff like the announcements back when we were saving Claptrap.

We're really going to handicap ourselves this much when we're also talking about trying to finish the quests in the shortest order possible? Wouldn't taking away the badass points, relics, skill points, and mods make finishing missions take more time?

I am loving our playthroughs. The company is good, I get to see all the characters, it makes things tough, etc.
What I don't enjoy is that it's taking a long time. Thus, it's holding my other characters back. Plus, Axton is someone I'm going to take to lvl 50 and I can't do anything with him as I agreed not to use him except for our play sessions. I also am very anxious to get to the second playthrough, and have less time I feel is scheduled for BL2, so if folks want to play LoL that night, we can.
I think Gordo feels pretty much the same way.
So if anyone feels like we're rushing it, know that it has nothing to do with fun level, personalities, or anything like that. It's just about being able to move forward in the game, with our characters, and to have more freedom of choice each night.
I was just suggesting those things for Cake's benefit because he thinks the game is easy. Personally, I'm fine with trucking through stomping the enemies we can stomp because I know what's waiting for us later in the DLCs and second playthroughs.

I'm probably going to pick up the 2 $5 DLCs tomorrow or today.
Additionally, if we want to cap our ass-kicking abilities, so be it, doesn't particularly matter to me. Just wondering if we're trying to emphasize speed or exploration.

Spent a bit of time reading up on how to spawn Vermivorous the Invincible because it's supposed to have good loot (lots of purpose, occasionally orange) and it's a raid boss that you have to go out of your way to find.
Theories:
- Each varkid has a variable chance of metamorphosing into Verm.
- Some varkids are not predisposed to evolve from the state they spawn in, some are
- If a varkid is going to evolve, it'll do so within five minutes of reaching its new state ... if a badass hasn't gone to super badass in that time period, it won't ever
Consequences:
- Crowd control needed to ID "useless" varkids that don't evolve, kill them
- more varkids in play = better spawn chance
- more players = more varkids

Same plan for tonight?
No, I'm sure we'll hit most missions. I was referring more to all the details and dialogue of the story. Even atmosphere stuff like the announcements back when we were saving Claptrap.
Some of that was genuinely bullshit, like us activating the ECHO when some other, unrelated dialog was playing, and getting stiffed. Setting a hot key that mutes the comm input also helps, as anything happening when we're all around gets amplified a shitload. We also need to call out destinations more definitively (like where we're going, what quest we're doing). We tend to set the first one well, then we start picking up additional quests or objectives and it seems like we get sidetracked. We get split up LOTS on maps where it's 2:2 or 1:3 and one group's under fire while another's wandering around. We've fucked up more than a few optional mission objectives due to comm issues. Hell, I'll freely admit to fucking up that Kai mission last night, but it's one in a long line of "goddamnit" moments.
We ought to at least scan a new area for boss-related challenges before we go charging in, as well.
Anyhow, I was referring to verifying the completeness of the mission load for Cake, pretty much because he's giving off the vibe he wants to go through all the non-DLC content there is on this playthrough, which I'll actually support.

By the way, that doomsday key hit. It's on that Borderlands page that Malcolm and Gordo linked...on page 23 on this thread.
