I was attributing more to the loss of identity from having to always build upon and yet outdo the previous generation's outdoing of the generation before that. Like, it's not enough to tell a story about a world in danger anymore -- you have to have more technomagery than FF7 and more romance than FF8 and more abstruse metaphors than FF10 and more nontraditional combat than FF12, until the series is so fucking dense that it can't pick up new fans OR new writers when the old ones drop out for whatever reason.
