If they lose it at an excessive rate, then yes. Five pounds per month is a very conservative clip, but I've also heard as high as two pounds per week. Gives your body time to adjust. My cousin dropped a fuckton of weight years ago, over 100 lb., easy. His gall bladder gave out within twelve months and he went in for minor surgery to get it removed. Course, another dude I knew had his doctors put him on a crash diet about 25-30 years ago because they told him he'd be dead in less than a year if he didn't. He was way, way worse off, though.

The younger you are, the more elastic your skins is, too, so that could have helped her, being early 20s

This is always my problem. Right now I am in full on FUCK YOU I AM TIRED OF BEING A SACK OF SHIT mode, and have managed to keep it for 3 or 4 months. But for the past several years I have been beating myself mentally before I even started the diet or the new gym.
Having a goal helps me, I think. When I am pushing a weight and starting to get tired of it, I think about how I will be doing a lot of kayaking/scuba diving with my kid next summer and how I better be in damned good shape. He needs to be able to look up to and count on Dad when the shit is real. So that's my motivation.
