Yeah, I get that data can be kept offsite, I am saying that if your entire company gets wiped off the face of the planet, who is going to make the call to get the backup tapes? Valve, as a company, could literally disappear in a second, unless they have spread out.

Hoping they have a fully autonomous backup office and data center in the midwest or something.

Like overnight? Are the yakuza going to take them all out?

I was thinking the classic volcano/earthquake/tsunami combo. An Isis nuke would be the same, or anything else that evacuates the city. Godzilla, maybe.

Point being.... People are eventually going to get fucked by keeping their library on someone else's computer.

A fair amount of our stuff runs on AWS. It's so replicated and distributed that life would end before our data did. The code would just be sitting there, with no humans to run it.

They have that data duplicated somewhere inland plus enough personnel to know what to do with it. The worst that'll happen is you lose your save game info, achievements, etc.

So Valve gets wiped from the face of the earth... but redundant data centers will keep our libraries available forever? There will be employees to write up the code to send us the email with the zip file with all of our content, available forever after offline?

What one thing is going to do it? They have at least one European office plus whatever other whatever other disaster recovery services they have under their belts already. They're bright enough to have enough user info data stored somewhere, probably two or three times redundant, to make sure people aren't fucked out of their software. If you're getting worried about the entire area between Seattle and Luxembourg getting pulverized in one go, then I don't think your games will make the top 100 list of "things you give a fuck about" in the aftermath.

I just have less confidence than y'all in the current paradigm. I think there's a fucking coming, eventually.

They don't have to be impossible to destroy. They just have to be harder to destroy than the U.S. government and/or civilization in general. No point in being able to get your games from Valve if there's no electricity for the computer you want to play them on.

I disagree. A disk on the shelf works even if the whole US power grid and internet goes down, as long as I have a few solar panels on the roof.

So all of civilization has burned down, and you're playing video games?

You know what will still be on the shelves at stores after the event you describe? Video games.

And if they run out, I know where I can get some...
