I figured some things out:
-You can search more than once in areas and probably need to. During my lunch I found 2 fire axes, a shotgun, a shotgun shell, and a flare gun.
-Different classes are better at different attacks. I'm not sure why my military guy sucks at hand to hand combat, but he does.
-You aren't limited to your suburb.(That map also shows zombie activity levels.) Also, here's a map of the streets of each suburb.

Were you searching an armory?

That's funny, this morning when I died I dropped two fire axes, a shotgun, a shotgun shell, a flare gun, and a book. Somewhere in the Mockridge Heights.

The shotgun, ammo, and flare gun I found in a police station. Different building types have different types of items to find.

Well, I didn't find a book and I actually found the fire axes in a fire house.

Today I found an ammo clip.
That's all.

That's just as well. I'm now a raging homicidal zombie and would have killed you anyway.
Graaah!

So I spent the past few days just searching.
I've got like 30 bullets, a shotgun and 10 shotgun shells.
Maybe one day I could have enough turns to attack something too.

You're playing it wrong. That's all I can assume. In two days of turns, I was able to search and find a flak jacket, 6 pistol clips, a shotgun shell, reload my pistol and shotgun, leave my shelter, attack and kill a zombie, upgrade my skills, check a new suburb police station for shelter, head south to another suburb when that didn't work out, find shelter there, search for a book, read a book, attack another zombie, and duck back into my shelter.
Now my zombie character, that's sloooooow. The only experience you can get is via attacking humans and they are usually not found in the open.

Well, I've actually got:
4 pistols
5 pistol clips
1 shotgun
2 flak jackets
1 baseball bat
1 first-aid kit
13 shotgun shells
2 flare guns
so maybe it's just time to kill something.

But it still took 2 turns to do all that.

What class are you? That will determine what weapon you'll want to use.
If you're military, the baseball bat is pretty much worthless to you until you upgrade your melee skills. However, if you're a civilian, then guns may be worthless to you right now.
I do know that last I saw your inventory count can be 51 with guns counting as 2. Thus, you are wasting your time wih 4 pistols. Dump some as soon as you use the ammo in them.
Your goal right now should be to log on when you have enough points to really do something. Then leave your shelter and roam around hunting zombies. Try to attack singles and smaller groups. Remember, the more there are, the more likely it is that some are active.
Once you find some prey just keep shooting or hitting until you are down to a few action points and then return to your shelter.
I can see a future where my character is maxed out and I am bored with just walking around killing zombies, but until then it's something to do and it's something to watch. They are constantly adding new things, and who knows where they'll take this. For all we know this is just a teaser for some new MMO game.
Personally, I think this setting would be perfect for a MMO game.

I've moved to Tollyton. Well, I'm more patroling between there and Mockridge Heights.
Tollyton has a LOT of human activity. Every building I've entered has peeps who want to heal you and will do so while you're offline. Lots of chatter in Tollyton. A guild there has requests on all the buildings to only go to a certain barricade level so newbs can get in and out. Plus, there seems to be active recruiting to rid Tollyton of zombies. Not sure if they're gearing up for defense or planning to rid the streets of zombies.
My zombie character who has died numerous times now, was in New Arkham and there seemed to be single zombies everywhere with lots of buildings with their doors left open.
It's actually kind of cool how the humans seem to head towards the center of the map while the outskirts appear to be more dangerous and uncontrolled.
From what I've read there are large guilds of zombies that travel and assault buildings all at once. I believe I've seen those groups, but I haven't been in a building being assaulted yet. I have come across a building with a dozen or more bodies inside. Speaking of that, when you're in a building, if you throw the bodies outside, you get experience points. Not many, but still they're easy points.

Just logged onto my zombie who has killed one afk army guy before and found some new flesh to feast on today. Attacked him until he was down to 2 hp left and then missed on my last shots ending my turns for now. Hopefully I'll remember to log in about a half hour later to take another swing :p

I think I prefer multiple guns afterall.
By holding 2 shotguns and 2 pistols, I can have 14 shots without losing APs to reloading. 3-4 of each may be ideal to maximize hunting during a 50-turn set.
Finally killed a zombie today, up to 72 XP.

Killed a zombie, got my pistol upgrade to 55%.
Then spent 20 turns attacking another zombie, and hit it 1 time.

The numbers were odd today. My zombie character has a 30% chance to hit and did so about 60% of his turns today, however my human has a 65% chance to hit and only hit 3 shots out of 8. Then while searching I only found two items in about 15 search attempts.

In my shelter someone reported that the northern area of Roftwood just got hit by a 70+ swarm of zombies.
