We don't print tax returns we burn them.
That would explain why I never seem to get the damned things back in a timely manner. Is this a common practice?

Actually we are quite the innovative office. We started it last year and are adding 2005 returns to the same disk if they return it. Able to have all your tax records on one disk. I would say not 1% of tax offices in the US is offering this service. Startup costs last year were pretty high, CDRW's labels packaging labels with instructions etc., but I think in the long run using 4 cases of paper in a tax season instead of 40 and the wear and tear and maintenance of the printers should save a lot.

How long do people have to keep tax returns? Turns out CDs break down over time. It's usually a matter of seven years or so, unless you write on the label with a ball-point which can accelerate it quite a bit.

Federal Tax Returns for most people must be kept for three year s after the due dat of the returns andmost
States require 4 years (just in case) I did not know about the 7 years for CD's but the truth is I keep their returns for at leat 7 years and have some for the last 10 years. Circular 230, which regulates my practice, requires that I provide a copy of the tax return to the client. It does not say that it can not disinigrate the next day. Obviously I do care about this issue so I keep and provide extra copies for at leat 7 years if needed.

If you want to start a new thread on the topic there are some very interesting new laws for 2006 and 2007.

I would start the thread but would rather not bore peeps needlessly.

thanks

Day whatever and everything is still working well. Possibly figured out the 5th computer. That external hard drive count? Doesn't seem like it should.
