Did you pull the sparkplug wire before you removed the blade? You do know that they can kick and cut you if you spin them to much while changing.

I'm so fucking manly though that if it did that the blade would just bend against my arm.

But in reality on the riding mower only the blade pully spins, it isn't cranking the engine. Even if the engine were to somehow start, the fact that the deck isn't engaged means the blades wouldn't spin.
