The day Piratebay is shut down permanently is when I'll worry.
That's dumb.
You KNOW cable is dying. You KNOW these channels all want their own slice of the pie. You KNOW the government and all these companies want to stop streaming. Why wait until everything is fucked before acting?

As we know it, yes. If they'd smarten up and go a la carte (almost like Popcorn Time), they'd be losing less biz.
You KNOW these channels all want their own slice of the pie.
If I watched many shows from a single channel, I might give a fuck. If those channels each want their own distribution endpoint, they can suck my left nut if they think they're getting $5/head/month.

They've done a shitty job so far and their methods have been draconian. Streaming isn't on the downturn. The more they tighten their grip with regulations and penalties, the more control slips through their fingers. I hear the gov't has been trying to stop drugs for awhile, too.

I have heard cable companies want out of the cable TV business. Not sure how true that is?

Exactly why you should give a fuck. Instead of the diverse options you currently have, you'll have far less unless you're willing to pay more. Enjoying that content without paying will make you a criminal.
So I don't follow your logic in ignoring the problem. The ostrich method won't work here.

Yeah, they have been. I wonder if we know anyone who's been hit with drug charges?
Point is no matter how effective or ineffective they are, arrests will be made.
I'd prefer we never get to that point.

For the record, The Pirate Bay is just the most public, and abused by the governments, face of torrenting. They have to move around so much they kind of suck.
"Kickass Torrents" is a much better tracker, currently.
I've heard.

The thing is there's so much good content out there now then it's easy to just pass on anything too inconvenient or priced too high to be worth watching. They aren't just competing with each other, they are competing with massive amounts of free original content on YouTube, Twitch, etc.
Basically, they are screwed.

Yep, only available on their paid streaming service.
It’s hard to argue with the general idea. Star Trek fans are extremely passionate, and many will undoubtedly subscribe to All Access if it is their only way to watch a new series. All Access is currently $6 per month and can be streamed via Roku, Chromecast, Android, and Apple TV. Moonves says they could soon potentially offer an ad-free subscription at $9.99 per month too.
And even better, the service is still going to have commercials.
Go fuck yourselves, CBS.

After thinking this over, Trek needs a series without so many characters that come written with sticks jammed sideways up their respective assholes. I want the Trek version of McHale's Navy + Sergeant Bilko + that occasionally and jarringly rises to semi-serious levels of action.

First teaser:
Uh, that looks like shit.
BTW, as the YouTube comments have pointed out, if this gets abbreviated like the other series, then this will be STD.

Looks like major shit. Even the ship design is shit.

The ship looks Romulan with a Federation saucer section.
CBS thinks this crap is going to get people to shell out $10-$15 a month for their content? Really?

I'm intrigued by the ship design and want to know more about why. But the cgi fails to give it any sense of scale. It looks tiny.

It looks like a cheap spinny rim, some kind of industrial fan, or the world's largest circular treadmill.

There are aspects of the ship I really like. Some I don't like. One of the things I always hated from TNG onward (though Voyager wasn't as bad) was that the ships stopped making sense. The windows in particular really bugged me. They suddenly became huge and at really odd angles for windows. So while I don't particularly like the design of the ship, I like the fact that it looks more like a feasible structure.
All shows and franchises are created with the intent of telling a story, and are then used to turn a profit. That's how the business works and we all accept it.
However, this just reeks of exploitation. It's not a coincidence that this new Star Trek show is launching alongside their streaming service. It's the only franchise they hold the rights to with an audience that would pay to see new episodes. Nobody's going to pay their ridiculously high monthly fee to watch CSI: Nursing Home or Survivor: South Central or any of their terrible, formulaic comedies.
So they had a meeting and decided to launch a new Trek show to get subscribers. Fine. That's business. However, this doesn't seem to have any love put into it. It's almost devoid of anything fans want. The ship design is from Phase II (whatever that is) and everyone hates it. It's set in a timeline that will prevent cameos that everyone wants to see. The CGI seems either rushed or like it had zero budget. As someone in the comments I linked points out, having the ship hiding in a dark hole in an asteroid with ominous music playing doesn't convey the brightness and hope the series is based upon. I'd point out that it also doesn't seem to match the "Discovery" in the title.
That seems to play into one theory I saw about this ship possibly being a result of the Kitamir Accords. Half Federation, half Klingon.

Let's face it, the refitted Enterprise from ST:TMP is the best Enterprise. The others are cartoons.

The federation ships have a style, and that style is delicate, graceful, and still dangerous as.fuck.
This abomination doesn't look like any of that. It's fan fiction, and worse, fan fiction with a 70s aesthetic. It took a real.fucking idiot to go forward with that design.

Fed ships may have had many motifs, but "dangerous as fuck" isn't among them. Most of them look like mobiles you'd place over a toddler's crib. Hardly threatening.

One of my fave scenes in any of the movies was the original JJTrek movie where the Enterprise comes out of warp with cannons already blazing and takes out a missile swarm that was about to kill Spock, Chekov and Sulu rocking the fucking casbah.
