Welcome to the party vaccine resistant Lambda variant...

SCOTUS to rule on IU's vaccine mandate.

Also, United Airlines just mandated vaccines for its employees. They join Disney and Walmart.

Where's my delta-lambda-gamma booster?

I hope IU wins. That being said, if I were pregnant, I would not take this vaccine, so I hope for reasonable exclusions, etc.

The Florida Board of Education passed a rule Friday allowing parents in the state to skirt mask mandates that districts may enforce for their children.

The rule, passed unanimously at an emergency meeting, lets parents transfer their kids to a private school or another district if they experience “COVID-19 harassment,” including mask requirements.

According to the rule, these students would qualify for a Hope Scholarship, an existing program created to protect children who are bullied, assaulted, harassed or threatened, in school.
Ah, Florida...

Vaccination + having it > just having it for reinfection
The study of hundreds of Kentucky residents with previous infections through June 2021 found that those who were unvaccinated had 2.34 times the odds of reinfection compared with those who were fully vaccinated. The findings suggest that among people who have had COVID-19 previously, getting fully vaccinated provides additional protection against reinfection.

One of my sister-in-laws, who is married to a Trumplican, went to a school board meeting yesterday to protest masks.

She's also a vegen who promotes eating meat is animal abuse on her FB page, while at the same time is a minority owner of a BBQ joint.

You can't make this shit up.

Kids went to camp for 2.5 weeks, each got some kind of sickness. The younger one may have had allergies, the older definitely got a cold or something like it. The youngest went to a real out of camp doctor. No apparent COVID, but I'm not 100% sure they got tested.

We have home tests we got for free (thanks government!), so I gave one to the oldest, and it was negative.

Today I've been sick: sniffles, ear pressure, feeling exhausted; pretty typical cold symptoms for me. Took the test, also negative. Thanks to the surge cannot get a real covid test until Monday.

US has about 5x the population of the UK.

UK peaked at 60k cases per day in the Xmas surge, then had a new surge in July that peaked around 43k/day, and is currently resting at ~25k/day. 75% vaccination fully, 90% at least one shot.

Peak deaths was about 1,200 / day, but is currently under 100 per day. (0.4% relative to confirmed cases)

So despite a current surge that's about half the # of cases, deaths are down by an order of magnitude.

For comparison, US had 250k/day at Xmas surge, currently at 130k/day, and climbing. Deaths were 3k/day in Xmas, and currently 600/day, and climbing. (Also 0.4%, but we won't really know the rate for a few weeks since death + death reporting both take time). We're at 70% with at least one shot, well behind the UK. 90% of people 65+ are vaccinated.

At 1k/day, COVID would be the 3rd highest killer in the US, behind heart disease and cancer, and 10x what the flu kills (estimated) in the US per year.

One of the guys in my golf league texted me today that he just tested positive and won't be coming for the next two weeks. He's also vaxed.

A good explanation of the varying kinds of immunity, and why vaccinated people can still get + spread the virus, but with fewer consequeuences.

So far he said he just has a sinus infection.

My company just sent out a letter requiring everyone to start wearing masks indoors again, vaxed or not.

"Vaccine mandates for in-person interactions—whether imposed by governments, employers or businesses—should make exceptions for the previously infected, who thanks to natural mucosal immunity are likely at less risk than never-infected vaccinated people of spreading the virus to others."

JFC. Yet people have been INSISTING that THE SCIENCE says you MUST get vaccinated even if you've had it...because the vaccine is BETTER.

Studies so far have shown that re-infection risk is lower for people who had the previous strain + vaccination versus those having just one, now that variants are showing up.
