Supreme Commander - post-release discussion.
I'm still saying that a 1v1 against the ALX with 500 units is impossible. I tried a few more times and it just isn't even a contest.
I can win handily against 2 AI:Adaptive allied against me, though. I might need at least 3 opponents to have a real challenge.

Just wanted to write this down since the ALX AI was so perfect at screwing me over:
Playing Painted Desert map, where they have 6 spawn points.
Me and 4 allied Advance AI all allied against a single ALX.
First 2 rounds: my allied AI were bumrushing my metal locations, screwing me over for resources. The ALX was then sending wave after wave of bombers to hit the few metal extractors I did have. I died quickly.
Third round: I bumrushed the metal this time. I got it all, but I didn't defend fast enough against the bombers, and they sent wave after wave against my commander. game over.
Fourth round: I bumrushed metal, build a massive air force and anti-air top keep the bombers away while I built ground troops. Then I hear "Nuclear Launch Detected." Game over.
Fifth round: I bumrushed metal, built massive anti-air, and nuke defense. Then wave after wave of the level 3 ground troops come at me.
Sigh.

I've figured out how to not get killed when the ALX goes for nukes immediately and launches one at you every 10 seconds... which I have had happen.Cakedaddy wrote:The ALX cheats, so, on most maps, I think it's unbeatable. However, it does force you to be efficient and multitask.
Right about when you are ready to go lvl 3, the ALX has been there a while and is building a nuke. Send your commander to a remote area and set him to patrol in big circles.... try not to have anything there for him to stop and reclaim, like rocks. Middle of an ocean is a good place as long as you can keep subs away, if present. The ALX seems to always target your commander with nukes, and as long as he is moving the nukes always miss.
I played for an hour the other night with nukes going off every 10 seconds.

I'd be in for a FFA Supreme Commander game on a weekend evening. I'd be 10000 to 1 odds to win, but whatever.
P.S. Played through the campaign and it was fine, although I'm lost on the overall story of the series. It got a little stupid when you become the Cybrans. The first mission is a lesson in multitasking with little resources. Actually, it really teaches you how support units can win your battle for you.
Overall, I thought it was a decent game. The only real negative I saw in terms of resource collection was that energy was ridiculously easy to create and get. I routinely hit the max on energy.

GPGnet, the way you play SC multi games over the internet (I don't know if there is a direct-IP solution?) has shut down. Using GPGNet was the only way I knew how to patch up the game client to the latest release.
If anyone knows where to find the latest patches for SC:FA, let me know. Every link I google is dead.
edit - 1. Yes, I believe a direct IP game is possible.
2. I found a patch, I will host it here when I get around to it, for future reference

Have been doing LAN matches with my kid.
1. Make sure you are on the same version of the game, else you get unplayable Desync errors. Helps to have the same map packs too, I suppose. Solved both issues at the same time and that fixed our desync errors.
2. We are both playing with a single version of the software, so that's nice. Didn't have to buy it twice.

Played an epic game with my kid, tonight. He and I were allied against 6 hard AI. The dominant enemy player got level 3 bombers and took out my commander.... but my kid had a Monkeylord stomping around. When I died the Monkeylord got the second-to-last enemy AI at the same time, then I saw the last AI remaining owned half the map and was throwing level 1 units at him just to reduce his unit count so he could build more level 3 assault bots. I could see his base was about to get overrun from two directions.... so I had him move his Commander away as fast as he could, abandon his base, and start moving the Monkeylord across half the map to the fully built enemy base. It was a race. Monkeylord won, our team's Commander survived.
Yay!
Yay!

Mod makes the game prettier.
There's also an AI mod to help you get the challenge you're seeking. We needed that kind of mod when we were trying to figure out the correct mix of AI commanders to fight.
