Advance notice:

After last year's "Hiking up at 11k feet and playing on a glacier on my birthday," I've decided that from here on out, I'm doing something crazy for my birthday.

This year, in 2 weeks, I'm getting on a train and going to NYC. I'm taking my pack and bear spray and hiking around Manhattan Island for the day, staying overnight in a hostel, and then taking the train back.

I've never been. And I hate cities. I'm treating this as a wilderness hike where the mountains have windows, and the bears are possibly packing knives and guns.

Very interesting. Went to NYC twice last year. Used to be pretty anti-city before (which, is why I had never been to NYC before last year). Was a lot of fun. 1 family trip, 1 just with the wife.

Enjoy!

It's a 6 mile circumference around central park. That will be my general hub for the day. I'd like to see 30 Rock. Maybe Empire State Building. Maybe hit the Met if it's a hot day or rainy, for a bit. Trying to avoid vehicles the entire time.

I'm aware I may be mistaken for a homeless person, schlepping around with a pack on my back, heh

The Met is pretty awesome (closed Wednesdays, dunno what day you are going). 30 Rock and ESB are nice. Times Square is just... interesting, particularly for people watching, but can be super crowded.

If google maps is correct, then Today I Learned the Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey.

Then I guess TIL Liberty Island is completely surrounded by NJ.

So, technically, still entirely within New Jersey.

But the little dotted line around it... so it's in NY, but surrounded by NJ. ewwww
