Sir, Great Lakes was an Origin run server, and Origin was on record as being against their usage. You could report people using them in game and they'd get banned. You were "cheating".
You are 100% incorrect. UO Assist was the only 3rd party app they ever approved.... at the time I was playing.
http://www.uoguide.com/UOAssist
UO Extreme, on the other hand, was a cheat program.
UOA only got approved after the last target macro got cut. Fuckers.
While Gordo is correct about UOA eventually earning a thumbs up, there were times when we used it that it wasn't legit and at best, frowned upon.
Again, I'm not judging. I think there's a HUGE difference between running a macro to replicate a boring action that the developer wants you to repeat 6,000 times before you can compete and using an aimbot to execute people.
There's assisting your character's development and there's blatant cheating. There is a difference.
Back to Pokemon Go, the "shit nearby" means NOTHING. It's always stuff 3 foot print away, and yet, stuff will pop up next to me and not be in that list. Plus, I'll walk around and nothing in the list gets closer. It's pretty worthless.

Well i don't remember that at all. When 3rd party apps were a new thing people used them because there was not yet an official policy. Then they made an "only approved apps" policy, and UOAssist and UO Automap were approved, and then they never approved anything else. I don't remember any of us using cheats on Great Lakes, we were even so naive that we didn't believe that... I'm drawing a blank on the name.... that complex UO macroing script was even possible when other people were using it. EasyUO? We didn't even believe the rumors of it existing, much less use it.
Then Trammal became a thing (it's not going to be a mirror, we swears!!!), and we all quit.

You could do some rather complex things. I recall it having a mini-scripting language.

I think it was EasyUO that we used to use on free shards where it was legal... we had complex mining scripts to move our guy around Minoc, mine in 10 different spots, smelt the ore, bank the ingots, grab more shovels from the bank if we broke all of ours, freeze if someone opened a Gate near us, RECALL AWAY if we took damage, wait 15 minutes, and recall back in and resume mining. All while AFK.
It was retardedly complex.

Well shit, where's the subroutine that buys more reags or recall scrolls when you run out?

Heh, yeah. That was a script in EasyUO, too. It recalled around place to place and bought out all the regs and scrolls, banked them, and then did the rounds again. The way the one shard worked we played for a long time... if you bought them out of an item, it would restock double. Eventually the vendors had more stuff than you could carry, so you had to keep an eye on the script.

That's a bug, something about their google API key dying or such.

To make cash I think I remember, WAY back in the day:
- going to the polar regions, sniping walruses from a boats, using their hides to somehow make metal and leather armour, then sell that shit for insane profit.
- making rounds at all the tailors and buying every spool of thread there was, then farming wool in the house on top of that to make fancy shirts. I was a one-man sweat shop.
All macros or scripts. I even remember when you could mine through your walls. That was ridiculously profitable.

Damn, I don't even remember there being walruses.

If the UO ecosystem were real, I would have made them extinct.

Saudia Arabia declares fatwa on Pokemon Go
Saudi Arabia has banned Pokemon Go, saying the game is un-Islamic.
The country's top clerical body has revived a fatwa, or religious ruling, against Pokemon, saying the craze promotes harmful ideas like polytheism and evolution.
The anti-Pokemon decree was first issued 15 years ago. But clerics extended it to cover Pokemon Go this week after receiving a number of questions about the game from believers.
The smartphone phenomenon is based on the 90s game. But it adds to the fun with augmented reality technology, which allows players to explore their real-life neighborhoods, and to superimpose virtual creatures on the real world.
