I generally dislike the idea of the federal government using public funds to provide charity to localized disaster areas, but that's because I think charity should be a private thing and not forced on the populace through taxation.

I'm seeing a trend here. :)

Just imagine how much more Americans would give to charities if they weren't taxed so heavily. ;-)

I've long felt that people's attitude towards charity and their personal obligation to their fellow man has been heavily marred by the welfare state.

I always give the first 10% of everything I make every paycheck to charity. Sadly, Uncle Sam has always taken that part from me and then some, leaving nothing for charity.
