As to what a 17-year-old would do, I can tell you what I did. I was given $1000 to buy a car as a graduation present. I spent $300 on the car, $50 on a fake ID, and the rest on blackjack and hookers (okay, strippers, but it doesn't sound as good that way).

'92's are very affordable. Maintenance on the other hand. . . .

Insurance on pretty much anything (nonsports car) older than 6 years was about the same. About $60-80/year for liability. No full coverage for a 17 year old. . .

This was based on adding him to our policy and multi car discounts. Get this though. He did go with the Explorer, and I'm glad. WAY smarter purchase. Adding him and his vehicle to our policy actually LOWERS the yearly total for our auto insurance. His cost is actually less than the additional discounts we get on the other vehicles for adding another vehicle. I was not expecting that.

I wonder if I bought a $300 peice of crap and added it to our policy if things would go even lower? I could actually save more than the $300 over time. . . If I continue adding vehicles, would my insurance be free?!?

Actually, I thought you were going to say "Yes. My Probe."

First car: 16 years old in 1987. Used '79 Chevy Chevette. Given as a gift by divorced, guilty father. Had leaky radiator problems, and engine died within a year.

Second car: 1988. Used '81 Chevy Chevette. Purchased by father guilty because first Chevette was a POS. Don't remember why it died... but it did.

3rd car: Used silver Ford Probe, 1989 (?) first car I actually bought when I was 19. Maybe 20. This was 1992. Needed new brakes the first month. New exhaust system the 4th month. In the 12th month (or so) the transmission was going out.

4th car: New blue 1994 Ford Probe. Bought cheap as a year-end closeout, which meant it was last year's model, which meant I would only ever get blue book for a car a year older than it actually was. Never any real problems.

5th car: 22 years old, New 1995 Ford Ranger XLT, purchased as a second vehicle. Bought this 2 months after I bought my first house. It served faithfully and flawlessly until it was murdered in 2003ish.

6th car: 2000, traded in the blue Probe and bought a new Trans Am. Never had any serious issues with the Probe, have never had any serious issues with the Trans Am.

Ford Focus station wagon, replaced the Ranger: new, never any problems for the 2 years we owned it. Would still have it except someone made us an offer that was pretty good.

Ford Taurus X, replaced the Focus. Never any problems.

In summary: every used car I have purchased have had nothing but problems. Every new car, I have never had any serious problems.

High School: 94 Accord, Manual, loved it to death, was passed down to my brother, who wrecked it.

College: 2003 Xterra SC... loved the shit out of this car... until it required a ton of work done to it and i opted to trade it in for...

2007 Accord Coupe, Not Manual(still kind of regretting that), no problems so far.

All used.

My car was used, however it was a 2008 model (Dodge Avenger) that I purchased in 2008. It still has all it's warranties (bumper to bumper for 8 years). Had less than 15k miles and was priced the same. It was a corporate car. There's a dealership west of Toledo that specializes in these types of cars/deals. Apparently they have people travel from around the country to come get cars from them.

So, I wasn't buying a 76 Gremlin and expecting it to last 100k miles.

Point being, I am like you in loving a car that nobody else has touched, but I love money more.

1968 Ford Galaxie 500 Convertible. Was suppose to be a second car, but the Tempo died early. Drove it till someone hit it (tearing the back end off), and then later, it was set on fire. (It wasn't insured at the time, so, it wasn't me). My favorite of all the cars I ever owned.
1991 Nissan Sentra SE - First new car. Traded the tempo in for it.
198x Subaru Wagon - Traded the Sentra in cause we were having a baby
1996 Pontiac Sunfire GT - Sold the Subaru, bought this. Second new car.
1984 Pontiac Grand AM - Gift from guilty parents who gave my sisters cars, but never me. Was my car while wife drove Sunfire.
2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport - Wife's new car, I inherited the Sunfire. Donated the Grand AM.
1966 Ford Galaxie 500 XL Convertible - Sold the Sunfire, bought this. I didn't want to drive a Sunfire.
1986 Pontiac Grand AM - Couldn't bring myself to making the '66 a daily driver cause it was too nice. Galaxie became a summer only car.
1995 Pontiac Sunfire. Replaced the disasterous looking Grand Am. I guess I do want to drive a sunfire.
2005 Nissan Armada - Replaced the Jeep as the wife's car. Jeep was a lemon, and after 4 years of owning it, got all but 2k of our money back. Including what we paid to put a trailer hitch on it. Worked out super cause the Jeep had to work hard to tow the boat. Armada makes easier work of it.
2005 GMC Sierra - replaced my Sunfire after I started my own business.

That's my car history. Years are the car's, not the year I bought.

1983 Volvo Station Wagon [2001] - The Civic leaked oil, but the oil indicator never... indicated. Engine seized up, blowing a orange hot rod out the bottom and onto the interstate behind me on my way home from a bar. Borrowed this car from my parents until I decided what to buy next.

My most recent purchase 2007 Chevy Silverado 9000 miles list price $32,000.00 my price $18,000.00. That 12000 miles was way worth the $14,000.00 savings. Not even broke in and bumper to bumper warranty for anther 30,000 miles or so.

The trick is figuring out why the used car is for sale. If it's because they're having money problems, be careful, as they may not have afforded to keep the maintenance up on it. If it's because it was just unsuited to their needs, then there's a chance you've got a good car on your hands. All other reasons I can think of are very bad and should be avoided at all costs.
