“Every record been destroyed or falsified, books rewritten, pictures repainted, statues, street building renamed, every date altered. The process is continuing day by day. History stops. Nothing exists except endless present in which the Party is right.”
The Lighthouse
That article was very confusing because somehow I read your link as "horrific buzz" like bad buzz.
It's not me, it's someone else.
The Lighthouse
Nope, good buzz. Hopefully, it lives up to the hype.

If they made horror films in the 1800s this would be one of them.
Two men, Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, arrive to relieve two other men for their four week stint manning a lighthouse. Dafoe is the captain and Pattinson is the laborer. However, neither man is upfront about all the truths of their life.
This movie is beautifully shot. It might be the best cinematography I've seen this year side from Midsommer.
The acting is extremely competent. Pattinson, imho, finally showed me he's more than some twinkly vampire. Dafoe was Dafoe. Do either deserve an Oscar for their performances? IMHO, no. They were great, but I've seen better this year and in better movies.
The story is tough to follow. Clearly it's about Pattinson losing his mind, but all of the dialogue and the style of story telling is in that of the 1800s or even earlier. It might as well be a different language. And don't get me wrong, it's brilliantly done, but does it apply to audiences today? I don't think so. In fact, I think the vast majority of viewers would be bored to tears and would never follow the plot. I think it's so abstract that it's getting a lot of "I didn't understand this, but I'd better vote for it so people don't think I'm stupid" votes.
Brilliant, beautiful, and expertly made at every level, but it still misses the mark. It's amazing they told a story in such an old style, but evolution happens for a reason. We're better at telling stories now than we were then.
This is for people who are huge fans of Poe or Lovecraft.

Didn't like. It's ambiguous. You are never sure what's happening from one scene to the next. And at 1 hour 45 minutes, it felt SO much longer. And on top of that, you never get any answers. Fuck that shit.

This movie was so beautiful and so well acted. It was just made 100 years too late.

I did some discussion/reading and there's a major theory out there that this entire movie is one big allegory for repressed homosexuality.
And I can sorta see that.
