I just accidentally dup'ed 5 pillars. This could be used to dupe C4 as well.

How? I didn't know there was a dupe bug in Rust.

I tried to recreate it, and it's not working. . . so, don't know.

I made 5 pillars to block a climbing spot by the house. I was trying to place them on the pillar stack and couldn't. Getting red pillar instead of green. I couldn't reach the spot. I got distracted with real life and ALT+Tab'ed out of the game. Did some stuff out of the game. Switched back to the game. The game immediately crashed. I logged back in and I had 10 pillars in my inventory. (Slot 3)

I tried to recreate by ending task, etc, but no go. Troy had a theory that there may have been a server reset and some data reverted, etc. But, since it was always in my inventory, that didn't add up. I do know (as I experienced with my maze) that you can spend resources from your pack, the server goes down, reverts back 15 minutes. All the stuff you built is now gone, AND the house parts do not return to your pack. I was out a shit ton of wood that day. . .

I thought I read about being able to do that in reverse as well. Have stuff in a crate during last save. Take it out, crash the server. Server reverts to last save. Stuff still in your pack, stuff back in chest. It seems it saves players' packs not with the rest of the server.

I can tell you that there are separate data folders for each player that are apart from the main save file for the server. I do not know if inventories are stored in these separate folders, but it's possible.

This sounds similar to one of the dupe bugs I looked up after your initial post. It has to do with removing connection to the game and moving things around in your inventory while the connection is gone, or something.

Ya, there is a quicker way to do things too. People are duping things without logging out/crashing.

On the next wipe, can you run it as vanilla? No mods. See if that gets any attention?

PVP, Active admins, Sleepers, No mods. Something like that.

Might as well just go ahead and wipe it. Seems like we lost everyone who got on. Maybe that'll get us another fresh batch.

Also, get rid of the "we'll wipe every 3-4 weeks thing" in the log in message. I think that might have driven some folks away too.

But it's true, as you can see. :) At least we're being honest about it.

As far as server pop, it's still about as busy as it ever was according to the monthly chart here. Admittedly that's not particularly busy, but it doesn't look to have decreased all that much.

But if you think going vanilla would be better I can do that. I'll save all the mod file settings off tonight for potential future use and reset it as a vanilla server, see how that goes.

I just looked and "Vanilla" does seem to be one of the most used descriptions on the most populated servers. Probably half of them are listed as "vanilla".

I'm going to guess that 689th isn't very high. With a month left, what do we really have to lose?

I'm going to sneak a peek at a few of those servers and see if there's legit NOTHING, or if they still use Oxide for commands.

Vanilla also seems to take you off the "Modded" tab and puts you on higher avg pop/lower server count "Community" tab.

Airdrops are currently bugged or something, and aren't spawning unless manually done by the admin. The actual effect on servers is kind of cool, many less weapons, people trying to buy explosives all over, wars being fought when an airdrop is eventually called in...

Another big current problem is the no admins and hackers on the big populated server. Throwing "Cheatpunch" on the tagline could help too. Just have to wipe the server at a good time so we can all log in and get a good starting number for people start joining and build on.

What I'm seeing right this moment in the servers lists-

Under "Community":

25 servers listed.
7 use the term Vanilla.
Oxide or C4 are not mentioned once, but are possibly alluded too via "airdrops" a few times.
3 servers have 40+ players.
5 have 20 +.
The rest have 11-18 players.

Under "Modded":

24 servers listed (25, but ours is at the top. I don't count it.)
1 uses the term Vanilla.
Oxide and C4 are mentioned 5 times, but alluded too multiple other times via kits, airdrops, etc.
4 servers have 50+ players.
6 servers have 30+ players.
The rest have 22-29 players.

Other common things discussed in the titles from both lists:
-wiped
-noob friendly
-air drops
-kits
-PvP
-Sleepers
-ActiveAdmins
-NoAdminAbuse

25 servers, are you just sampling the top? When we were sorting through them last night there were a 100 or so populated ones. 1000s total? Still 1/3rd as many community servers as modded ones?

Do I need to answer that? I think it speaks for itself... :D

When we were sorting through them last night there were a 100 or so populated ones.

I sorted by "Players", forgot to add that.

Still 1/3rd as many community servers as modded ones?

Two things here:
1. That doesn't matter at all. I mean, there's only 13 official servers... Also, who cares how many servers there are? What matters is how many players there are.
2. Are we trying to become "vanilla" or move into "community"?

So, how about:

[DTM]Vanilla|PVP|Sleepers|NoAdminAbuse|NoobFriendlyButAvoidTheCatt|Wiped3/4

Presuming I can figure out how to get Oxide off of there, of course. Not sure about that part. But I'll see what I can do.

lol about Catt. Only thing I know I wish I could have seen on some servers was confirmation they had Cheatpunch running.

Edit: but then again that might make hackers test on your server, that'd be bad

How about population wise? Cake and I have liked the 40-60ish so far, if it get above that it always ends up feeling like endless rock dudes attacking from nowhere.

Thanks to one of the mods, there's a counter on how many players have been on the server. Since the last map refresh:
2:00 AM: 109 users are tracked by Oxmin!

I did a /history this afternoon and saw a full conversation between some players from the night before about crafting.

Are all 109 players just getting on when we're not? :D

Oh, one more thing, gotta dump the PvP protection. I believe some folks thought it was a permanent thing.

I actually see high populations in both versions. No idea what the secret to getting populations is. Is there a way to fake the number of people connected? I have wondered that before when we were playing on 50+ servers and not seeing anyone in Big Civ or coast while running around. Resources everywhere, etc. Seems people will continue to play on a server, even after it's been wiped, if it had active admins and a population.

The server I'm on now, they have a Steam Group and a TS server that people can use to contact admins. Admins are activating air drops (it's bugged right now and only happens manually). They are addressing player concerns, etc. But I've been on 100+ servers where admins are missing and hacking/cheaters are rampaging, and people stay and play. So again, just don't know. But I really think that if there was a way to fudge the population, that would bring more people.

I wish it didn't use your steam name in game. I wouldn't want people to know I was an admin (if I became one).

Done! Well, with the next server reboot. Although it will all be gone when I take us vanilla tonight.
