100 Titans down? Wow. That's a lot more than 116K.

One side list 56, one side lost 48.

Knightfall1: The actual titan kill counts are 25~ kills for N3/Pl. and 65~ kills for CFC/Rus, RIP in piece PL

Roofussanchez: Actual Titan Kill Count 66 (PL) 60 (CFC) http://spookyskeletonstats.com/ RUS are confirmed targeting CFC ships in betrayal, (Latest Titan Killed was MrLahey of PL)

When the dust settles they are saying that a quarter million dollars in in-game assets were destroyed in the battle. Maybe more as the killboards adjust today.

I heard a rumor that CCP caused it by screwing up a patch and changing protected space?

Na, the non Goon allied bloc forgot to pay a bill in a strategic system, and they lost control of it. Goons moved in with quickness and with Titans, which they hadn't used in combat like that in the history of their alliance. Pretty crazy stuff.

Found this
As others have already explained, the gist of it is that one side (N3 and PL) lost their ownership of a space station through non-payment of the rent bill. This my or may not have been due to a spy interfering with things, or a bug in the game payment, or simple incompetence of the people responsible for upkeep. It's irrelevant now, because that particular station was the headquarters for N3/PL in the war that they're fighting against CFC/RUS. This was their main base. When CFC/RUS leaders saw the lapse in ownership, they leaped at the opportunity to take the enemy's main base. In order to conquer the station, they needed to shoot it until it was reduced to 0 health. Stations have millions and millions of HP, so the best way to conquer them is with overwhelming dps from a large fleet of capital ships. CFC/RUS forces did exactly that, by deploying a large fleet of dreadnoughts into the system. Dreadnoughts are relatively inexpensive, in the scale of supercapital warfare, but they put out extremely high DPS. They're like trebuchets.

N3/PL forces responded with a supercapital fleet to crush the massed CFC/RUS dreadnoughts attacking their home base. N3/PL are well known for having the largest combined supercapital force in the game. The attacking dreadnoughts would be obliterated if they weren't defended by a similar force, so CFC/RUS sent their own supercapital reinforcements. The dreadnought fleet was able to blitz through the station's HP and capture it before the N3/PL defenders could muster - but that's not the end of the story. There is still the matter of ownership of the whole star system. That is accomplished by anchoring - and defending - a structure called a Territorial Claim Unit (TCU). The TCU takes several hours to come online (at which point it become invulnerable), so during that onlining time, it must be defended. That is the objective of the current battle: the attacking CFC/RUS forces have anchored their TCU (it's like planting a flag saying they conquered the system) and they must now defend it for several hours, while the defending N3/PL forces try to break through and destroy the TCU, thereby allowing them to take the station back again.

What makes this fight special is the sheer scale of it. Major powerblocs almost never commit this many supercapitals to a battle if they aren't sure they're going to win. Supercapitals are prohibitively expensive, take months to construct (i.e., to replace when destroyed), and are a strategic asset of the powerbloc. Titan fleets are guarded with extreme paranoia lest they be caught unawares and lose a single member; for over 100 of them to just leap into a toe-toe slugging match where their chances of survival are quite low is... unheard of. These two powerblocs are really taking an insane risk here. At least one reason contributing to the acceptance of risk is that this is N3/PL's main base in the war. If they lose it, they very well may lose the war, as well.

The two largest powerblocs in EVE, the Goonswarm-led CFC on one side and the conglomerate of two of the largest coalitions, Pandemic Legion and N3 (will be referred to as N3PL) have been clashing over the last few months in what is commonly referred to as "the Halloween war".

Recently, N3PL has frequently been using a dominant show of force, referred to as the "wrecking ball" (consisting of supercarriers and titans supported by carriers) for strategic fights. About a week ago, CFC forces first attempted to break the "wrecking ball" by dropping a large amount of dreadnought-class capitals right on top of the opposing supercaps in the system of HED-GP, but the fight was overshadowed by server issues and CFC thus refrained from committing their own supercapital force to the fight.

Today, N3PL surprisingly lost sovereignty over PL's warzone staging system of B-R5RB, apparently due to an administrative issue with sovereignty bills. CFC forces were quick to capitalize and dropped their own Territorial Control Units, which take 8 hours to online until sovereignty is claimed.

N3PL once again jumped their Wrecking Ball fleet in to destroy the TCU, with CFC also committing supercapitals and a large number of dreadnoughts, as the server seemed to be holding steadily this time. At approximately 1600 EVE time (UTC), the opposing forces engaged, with EVE's Time Dilation system quickly kicking in and reducing simulation speed to 10% of real time in an attempt to help the server cope with the enormous load. Approximately 150 minutes of fighting (15 minutes of simulation time) later, there are at time of writing seven N3PL titans and two CFC titans have reportedly been destroyed. Each titan, if sold, would be worth approximately 100 billion ISK, which translates to approximately 2500 USD worth of game time on the in-game market through EVE's PLEX system.

For comparison, in the Battle of Asakai that made gaming news just over a year ago, a mere three titans, six supercarriers and assorted capitals were destroyed, for a total of around 700 billion ISK destroyed.
