A Swedish film about a grumpy old man. The film takes place in the present where he lords over his housing development, but shows the rest of his life in flashbacks. These usually occur when he's attempting to commit suicide. Those suicide attempts continue to be thwarted by the goings on in his development that require his direct involvement.
The genre would be comedy-drama. There are laughs and there are feels.
The acting, story, pacing, and direction are all extremely well done.
A beautiful movie about life and love. Don't let that scare you off though. While your significant other will connect with the film, this is a man's film. I think a good way to describe it would be to say that it's a better About Schmidt.
