If you like Dwarf Fortress and Prison Architect, you might want to give Rimworld a try. It's essentially a less complicated version of the former built in a style reminiscent of the latter, set in a Firefly-esque sci-fi universe. I can't seem to stop playing it yet.

Even though it's simpler than DF it's still pretty challenging at the regular difficulties. I've killed off a few colonies already. One was lost to starvation in an unexpected volcanic winter, one was lost to heat stroke and a firestorm that took out the power to the air conditioning while a rampaging rhinoceros kept everyone away from fixing it, and one that was already having moody depression problems spiraled out of control into berserker madness after the pet dog was killed by a turtle. I think I'm going to turn down the challenge a notch for my next game.

Have played a lot of this game. Found about it on some forum and bought it directly a year (or more?) ago. It's fun, definitely smaller scale DF. They have really, really improved the game's depth and environment.

I like to play the hard AI storytellery, because I'm masochistic like that. My only complaint is that the AI always ends up throwing massive waves of hostiles after only a few light assaults.

It's hard to amass an army like in DF too, as you don't get 10+ migrants a season. Maybe 1, if you are lucky, and it's probably some old person with a peg leg who can't shoot for shit.

Hey Troy!

I was strongly looking at this during the Steam sale. However, the sale price was only $3 off.

Is it worth it? Do you know if the expansion(s?) are worth it?

Certified good game. Kind of like dwarf fortress. Dunno about the expansions. I think I have the royalty one.
