Good for Memphis... I can honestly say I am surprised. Memphis never struck me as a city that gave a shit about anything except hating whitey.

I was downright amazed on my way in to work. They spent a long time listing the MANY different things being given away for free or reduced prices for someone who can show residency for anyone in the effected areas. It was one hell of a list.

Holy Crap!

The aftermath seems to be worse than the actual hurricane.

I especially like this
CNN's Rick Sanchez reported that authorities were concerned for the rescuers' safety because some people have become violent toward the rescuers.

WTF are they thinking?

Heard that toilets at the Superdome were overflowing.

This means that either plumbing doesn't work, which wasn't reported, or stupid ignorant fucking people didn't bother flushing them.

Maybe if they stop shooting at rescue workers they'll get one.

Dont need power to have flushing toilets, and why would they stack 25k people in a place with no running water, then not let them leave for days?

Every time I watch news coverage I get more depressed, but I also get disgusted at every aspect of how people are behaving, from the victims to the rescue workers to the lack of organization by those who are supposed to be in charge. It's only been a three days, but goodbye civilization. I'm not accepting excuses at the moment.

People in NOLA are violent after Katrina.

Videogames cause violence.

Therefore, people in NOLA have played too many videogames since Katrina hit.

...

I wonder if they'll make GTA: New Orleans next? With a special "Katrina" cheat code featuring violent winds and flooding? Should be fine with, as long as there's no nudity! And with the special "Shoot all Looters" option turned on, it's perfectly legitimate to shoot the cops.

Gah, I'm getting a cynical overload. I need to stop watching the news.

I said no water or electricity. Just like in elementary school 100% of the class is punished for what 5% of the class is doing. But you are right there certainly were no plans in place to aid in a disaster of this size at home.

Know who I've noticed are the most competent, professional people on the scene? The god damned baby-killing military personel from the Bataan battlegroup.

I heard Wal-Mart donated a million dollars for relief, and also have made their "national data center" (whatever that is) available for people who need to contact loved-ones.

But I still need to turn off the news. It's pissing me off.

Know what I'd do if some fucking idiot was brandishing a gun at people who were trying to rescue me? I'd organize about 10 men and we'd take that animal out.

Again, no excuses today.

Ah, women gangraped in bathrooms. Lack of water and power sure has some odd effects.

Looks like I was 10 seconds too late turning the TV off.

I saw we cut our losses, build a perimeter, & make New Orleans a mega-prison, a la Escape from New York.

My folks live in west-central Louisiana (near the border with Texas, near the midpoint in terms of north/south) Here's the word from my sister who works at a Catholic school in Natchitoches:
Things are really sad here. We have over 40 new students at the school (enrollment regularly 405) with more on the way. Parents are crying in the office. They have lost everything. There is no gas in Leesville and we are running out in town-- for emergency vehicles only.

Leesville is right next to Ft. Polk, which used to be home to the 4th Infantry Divison (Mechanized). Now it's a Joint Readiness Training Center or something. Now, every man Jack has a cock-eyed scheme for what to do with the homeless people in NOLA. This could be completely naive, but wouldn't a military base that used to house 10,000 soldiers have the infrastructure to handle a bunch of refugees? Now, granted, the 4ID left about 10 years ago, but still...if nothing else, there's plenty of woods for latrines.

Interestingly enough, I just heard that same suggestion from the Mayor of Baton Rouge on http://www.wwltv.com/. He's suggesting using currently unused housing and hangers on active bases as well as opening up closed basis for further housing.

He talked about how they want to help, but putting people in their university classrooms and their community center is a temporary measure, and these people will have to be moved somewhere else by next week (at least the one's at the university, he spoke of a responsibility not to abandon educational priorities when other options that would allow the school to operate properly exist).

For some reason while watching that, I formulated this:

They don't loot because they're poor, they're poor because they are the type of people who like looting.

Haven't watched the news coverage of this.

And, I'm quite glad.
It's not me, it's someone else.
