Gordon,

Earlier you mentioned that we should not be so full-steam ahead about social liberalism, and be cautious of any bumps in the road (or such). What about the environment does not justify a similarly cautious approach? Why should we be full steam ahead about creating pollution in the name of economic growth, yet be cautious with the liberties and freedom of individuals?

Because the two are unrelated in this context. How you approach one thing does not neceissarily work to approach something else. For instance, you milk a cow by getting to its udder and using hand motion to extract milk. This same approach will not work, however, with the bull. While you might get something from him, it won't be milk.

I don't think your analogy applies. You are referring to known methods of production, with known outputs.

In this case, both are essentially unknowns. We don't know what impact human emissions will have on the environment, nor do we know the social impact of changing societal norms. Thus, if we tread carefully in one, why not the other?

So... I'm suggesting that socially liberal mindset should be changed without any new laws. How does that compare with environmentalist fanatics? Are they not looking for legislation of personal, corporate and government behavior?

I already practice the conservation of electricity in my own home as often as it is convenient for me. I don't want a new law that says NO AC AFTER 9 PM.

Well, I meant alternate current... but the same applies. I don't want no god damned hippies or their movie making leaders putting me in jail because... well, period.

Because isn't this the goal of environmentalists? The forced reduction of energy usage, particularly in America?

Their goal, afaik, is forced reduction of emissions, regardless of how. Although, conservation is prolly #2.

Then making us all go back to subsistence farming.

I read a definition talking about conservation about a week ago. It was more or less saying to do the same thing we are now, except with less (less gas, less coal, less lectric). When I read that I thought, man... that is NOT Gore and his gang.

Screw that. I haven't turned off my AC since the winter of 2004, when it got cold outside for almost a whole week.
