There's about a billion factors that contribute to the shithouse that is the U.S. education system.

Nah, the loss of basic morals in this country is such a gigantic problem that it just seems like there's a billion problems.

If anyone actually gave a shit about anything beyond their own lives in the next 5 minutes, it would still work. But it won't happen. Too many people cry "that's archaic!" as soon as you mention it.

In fact, I will be stigmatized more for even mentioning this issue than will a shitty parent that ignored his or her child's education.

It is wrong to suggest that someone is wrong. Everybody's lifestyle, no matter what it is, is now equal and valid, for some reason, because "we're a free country."

There are a lot of peripheral things in this country that get demonized. Video games, rock music, even pinball machines have been blamed for the perversion of youth. But those things are all secondary to being educated and having a good brain. Halfway intelligent people know that a video game is just a game. But now we're losing the primary education and intelligence and discipline that allow us to handle the peripheral things, and the ripples from the weakened center will get stronger and stronger, and the problem is getting compounded from one generation to the next.

I say again, we're fucked.

So, essentially, you blame the hippies?

Even if people did get good grades, who cares? The educational system is crap, has always been crap, and will always be crap. It's not the hippies that are the cause of this, it's the government.

Put education back in the hands of private citizens, make them pay for it directly, and then we'll see what's truly important and what's worth funding. Somehow, I imagine we'll get a lot more done with a lot less.

Whoa. I don't trust most people to have kids, let alone to care about their education. There'll be even more dumbasses.

Both Catt and Malcolm make valid points.

So let's just keep blaming hippies. Hippie parents, hippie educators, all, ultimately, are hippies.

So you'd ratehr have the government dumbasses in charge of making more dumbasses instead of individual dumbass parents being in charge of making more dumbasses?

I can't see how that's any better. The only real difference is they take my money to do the first one.

I'm with TPR. If we're gonna have dumbasses, at least let me keep my money.

There needs to be some sort of incentive to get idiots to send their otherwise idiot children to school. Giving the kid a proper education ain't incentive.

But dear Christ, the education system in this country needs a major overhaul. It'll take decades before anything actually gets done.

Vouchers would be a good step. If you can't afford private school you're locked into a failed public education system. Where's the incentive for them to improve? Where else are you going to go? Your kids are already there because you can't afford private school.

Ohio is experimenting with "Charter Schools" which are privately run but receive State money according to how many children they have enrolled. Don't know too much about how they are doing as all my Grandchildren are in excellent Public Schools. Would probably look into it more if it affected my "own". Rather typical isn't it.
