Mr. Glasnost
We won the cold war. Not because the commies are gone, but because we got a huge technological boost from having "fought" it.
Cost us? Hell, the cost of building some nukes is nothing comapred to how nicely it pushed our economy into a seriously tech-based footing over the years. I attribute a fair amount of our recent economic troubles to the eventual impact of not having a strong national "enemy" to compete against anymore.

This is a little off topic, but your comment reminded me of something I saw on TV the other day.
During the race to get to the moon, the Soviet Union had the advantage of larger space pods, because their technology was worse.
See, the U.S. was able to compact the size of their nukes. Since our warheads could be small we developed small rockets for our ICMB's.
The Soviets couldn't shrink their nukes so they had to develop much larger rockets to carry the larger payload.
