#16/17 - Truth
#24 - True stories impact me... movies not so much.
#26 - Christmas is fun again.
#28 - Much truth. I love picking movies for them, and we make events out of them.
#29 - I get 1 hour of life a day. I have no idea how you people play video games.
It's not me, it's someone else.

There were 2 or 3 that did not apply to me, but most went from "Somewhat" to "Very True."

#8 - We didn't really change our eating habits much. We have always sat down at the dinner table at night, as a family, for meals.... at least 4 nights a week (too much fun eating junk food in front of a sci-fi movie)

#11 - Parenting is exactly as hard as I thought it would be, but the first 2 months were my first experience with real, prolonged sleep deprivation, and it taught me how much of your entire life outlook is based on having enough sleep. The toughest man will go to pieces without enough sleep.

#12 - My kid is not much of a candy monster. Dessert after supper.... that's typically the only time he gets sugar all day. I bet he hasn't even drunk 12 cans of pop his entire life. He's a water/milk kid.

#15 - We don't have any faults, so this is a trick entry.

#16 - Woman work. N/A.

#19 - Talking to childless friends... a little bit harder. When the kid was little I made an effort to not talk too much about him to my childless friends, because I remember being there, and I know they dont want to hear it more than a quick "he's fine" status report. As the kid gets older I would like to start taking him with my friends to the more fun movies like Avengers and stuff, so he can see how mature grownups can go out in public and have fun while still being adults, but sometimes i get active resistance because they think he will be noisy in the movie or cockblock them from hitting on women in front of their wives or I don't even know. None of them drink so it isn't like we'd have to skip going to bars. It does change things, unfortunately.

#20 - Our kid has always been precocious, and people have always said as much to it, and they say it is because he is an only child. I say it is because he was lucky to be born with a good brain (DNA from my side), I have been teaching him new things all his life, a night has not gone by since birth in which one of his 2 parents have read to him (which indirectly teaches him that he is worth our time... that he has worth), and we have never, ever spoken to him as if he were a child. We've always used full sentences and proper grammar (I, at least, have always used proper grammar with him. My wife tries, bless her heart).

A little nature, and a lot of nurture. I'm the best dad ever and he WILL be running what is left of this country in 30 years.

#21 - Other kids have broken things in this house. My kid hasn't.

#22 - Absolutely will not turn into my parents. I actually plan on raising my kid.

#23 - The teen years may or may not be a challenge... I am prepared for it. I already teach him the importance of not acting like a turd... if I can ingrain that now, it will take care of 75% of the teen angst. Or not. I have plenty of strategies in the wings. Thank god I don't have a daughter, all I have to say.

#24 - movies with kidnapped/abused kids.... yeah, those hit hard. Was unexpected.

#25 - Fortunately, my kid is cool, and I can spend shit on myself and pretend like it is for him and we can both enjoy it.

#27 - eh. "Trip to the airport" is like the first couple weeks when you are a parenting fish out of water. After that you learn the 3 or 4 things to always have, and you keep the diaper bag stocked and it's all fine.

#28 - kid movies... eh. I have worked harder to make him like my movies instead. Kid movies are a great way for him to bond with his grandmother in dark silence for a couple hours. (Silence is the best way to deal with his grandmother)

#29 - after bedtime... yep. That's when the wife and I can watch The League or whatever, then I can hit the cave and do some uninterrupted gaming with a beer or some hot tea or whatever the fuck I feel like.

#31 - IS all worth it. I have always known I would be a good dad, as a young adult I always knew that someday I would want kids, and I had plenty of good examples in mind of how NOT to be a good parent. It didn't happen for a long time, then in my mid 30's it did, and I have never regretted it for a second. Taking him home from the hospital after he was born I felt like I won the lottery, and I couldn't believe I was so lucky that they were actually letting me KEEP this thing.

He's 8 and we're still in the phase where he will cuddle up next to Dad under a blanket so we can watch Doctor Who together, and I KNOW this time is fleeting, so I do cherish it while it is here.

I lived 35 years childless, and had a few good years of single life banging hot chicks around the world before I got married, so I have lived on both sides of the fence. I have perspective and experience from both sides of the fence. I can say that parenthood is the best thing ever.

And, apparently, they will also now be properly folded. Perhaps even, dare I speculate, ironed.

Being a parent

So last night my kid was standing in the bathroom about to take a shower, shifted his leg wrong, and his patella went roaming. He fell in such a way that he blocked the door in, and was in so much pain he couldn't bear to move. His mom couldn't get to him and he called 911 himself right there from the bathroom floor.

When the paramedics got there he needed to move out from the doorway so they could get in, so he recited the Litany of Fear from Dune, in order to screw up the courage to do it.

I consider that a parenting win.

That's his kneecap over there on the left. They fixed him up at the hospital and he doesn't even have a brace. "That just happens sometimes."

He said it hurt more than getting hit by the car, and the resulting medical stuff he had to go through.

But the takeaway is that he recited Dune. That magnificent nerd.

Ha, I asked if he tried. He did. He couldn't get it in so he called 911.

Someone spent time and money on this study.

I'd say a third is actually a positive statistic. I wouldn't have guessed it would be that low because kids are stupid.

Next they should study how many pre-employment kids and teens actually understand how money works and where it comes from.
