Security shite - goddamnit

So, my buddy tosses a LAN party today. I haul my machine & try to install Rise of Nations. Something fucks up & the system hangs. After a couple tries at this, I decide to run AdAware cos I check the task manager & some odd processes are there. 250+ goddamn spyware objects. TWO HUNDRED FUCKING FIFTY!

"How in the mother of fuck did those get there," I wonder aloud.

I check the task manager for current processes. My buddy looks at it & says, "KHost.exe? What the hell is that?"

Oh, yes, indeed, the dreaded Kazaa. One of my roommates will pay dearly for this. So I think to myself, "Oh, shizzle, wonder if I got any viruses." Do the McAfee free scan. Two separate viruses, one merely somewhat annoying, the other with a disabled keystroke log.

Then I looked at the directory of the infected file. After cursing loudly several times, it hit me exactly where it came from.

Anyhow, apparently, I've been a tad lax in my security measures, considering that no one uses my machine but me, & I generally don't do things stupid enough to warrant getting a goddamned virus. Apparently, this must change as some fucker got to my computer without my knowing & not telling me. What's everyone's security loadout here on your home PCs? What do you all recommend?

Oh, yes, when I track that sumbitch down, heads & balls will roll like the mighty Mississippi.

I'm presently behind a router, so that's the first line of defense.

On my PC I'm using:
Norton Antivirus - active & passive protection
Spybot S&D - mostly active protection... you've got to run it.
SpyWareBlaster - mostly passive protection... you tell your PC what not to allow
Adaware - mostly passive protection... you tell your PC what not to allow

Google Toolbar blocks most popups, which can be malicious.

So far so good.

Router is the first line of defense.

Trend is the second line of defense. (virus scanning and a second firewall)

A Pop up blocker stops the horseshit from popping up.

Spyware and AdAware complete the protection.

It's all my responsibility, but certainly not my domain. She should be able to go where ever she wants. I just have to keep it running smooth. And actually, I have everyone pretty trained about viruses. It's the spyware that gets in.

Also, lock down the workstation, require a login at bootup, and lock your screensaver. I use a 10min delay then you have to have the password to get in. Keeps overzealous visitors and roomies off your PC without supervision.

Yeah, so in spite of all these programs I run, and not installing strange software, and not browsing russian porn websites, I still got heavily infested with something last night. I've been working on the last 24 hours trying to fix it, but I get rid of one thing, and 4 other things install themselves. I've been going to www.pestpatrol.com to scan my system because I've installed three additional spyware killers, and pestpatrol seems to find the most stuff.

Well, the lastest malware invasion no longer allows me to go to the pestpatrol webpage.

I'm declaring Broken Arrow. Time to wipe the drive.

Yeah. I'm all patched up right now, and next thing I'm doing is disabling ActiveX.

My security settings were all default.
