Turns out I've been saying this word incorrectly, forever.

https://www.google.com/search?q=tarpoline

I always pronounced it TAR-pollin. Emphasis in first syllable, 2nd and 3rd just kinda fast. Recent audio books were saying it differently. At first I thought the narrators were dumb, but nope. I was the dumb one.

Have always just said "tarp" in conversation.

I've always just said tarp.

I am still embarrassed at all the words I picked up through book reading at a young age and said horribly wrong until corrected years later.

My wife does that, same with a girl I dated in college. I do it sometimes as well, but it's about a 10:1 ratio for her word vs mine.

Although, we split on "hovel" but the internet says we're both right.

Shovel. I read the word, then gleaned the intent, then rewinded it in my head, and it rhymed with shovel.

I thought hovel and novel sounded alike.

I don't think it matters. I won't be lusting for the death of those who say it differently , today.

Yeah, that's how I categorize them. My wife rhymes hovel with shovel.
