The monkey got recursed at the end of the first one, was a scene after the credits. The monkey stole some of the gold again on its own.
That is the gist of it, the compass shows what you want most and he just didn't know what that was anymore I guess. But I would think what he would want most would be to get out of Davy Jones debt.
