At least as anyone knew it.

I'm thinking this isn't a good thing, but a business decision.

It's both. Sort of.

The big names started pulling out becuase it's become too expensive and a big mess. That's 90% of the income for the show so the E3 folks started spinning like mad. And now those big names may be coming back.

It'll probably be MUCH smaller than it was, and be mostly for industry insiders to talk to each other. Rumor is $3000 for a ticket if your company hasn't purchased a space at the show, so that should keep out the rif-raf.

I think PAX will take over as the spectacle. And it's a good thing, I think. PAX is more geared for the gamers themselves instead of the media, which is as it should be.

I tried PAX once, but it made me sleepy.

PAX?

Seemed more family-oriented tv programming to me than gamers.

Nope, not TV.

PAX

In two years it's gotten pretty big. This year I'm betting it will be bigger than E3 was (it's taking up the convention areas of three entire hotels this year now that it's outgrown Bellevue's main convention center), but there's still a couple of weeks to go.

Most of the big developers have signed up (see the list of Sponser on the right hand side of the page) and will be doing their thing. It's more sedate than E3, but we should still see some fresh stuff coming to PAX, and more so in the future now that E3 is turning into an insider event.

Maybe they'll allow the booth babes that E3 banned.

When they did it a couple years ago, I was thinking, "That's a dumb idea... booth babes are the most popular part of the entire convention."

Then the people running it killed it. Go figure.

Besides having to wait a little while longer this time around for the big suprises I don't really think anything will change.

The real E3 doesn't even take place during E3 it happens the Monday, Tuesday, and Wed when MS, Sony, and Nintendo give there own presentations. E3 itself hasn't been exciting for years.

From all the shit I've been reading, no one's really sorry E3 is dying. Neither am I.

That's ridiculous console talk.

The reason I think it sucks is because E3 was once declared to be for the gamers of the world to get their peeks at the latest stuff. If it's replaced, no big deal, but I'm not sure how that'll happen without another E3 eventually being created. Which is stupid since these big companies are pulling out of E3 to save money.

I think the difference is the media influence. E3 was supposedly so gamers could see what was coming, yes, but they did that by inviting the media and then doing everything they could to make a big enough spectacle so that their new thing would be the one that got written about.

PAX actually has gamers coming for themselves. Sure there's still some preasure to impress to build word of mouth, but it's not the same because word of mouth has no limitations while the media only has a certain number of column inches or a certain limited airtime to talk about E3. So where for E3 there were winners and losers in the media battle, with PAX it's possible for everyone to be a winner in the word of mouth competition. I suspect this will result in more solid demonstrations and less noisy and showy smoke and mirrors.

At least that's how I hope it works out.

How are you being denied the latest stuff by it being moved to July and letting in less reporters in?

Gamers were never given a chance to experience E3 themselves anyways.

Not sure how you got that out of my statement that you quoted.

Anyway, my point was these big companies are pulling out saying it costs them too much money to prepare for E3, yet they're just going to turn around and do the exact same thing for the media and for PAX.

I just didn't see E3 going away as something that was bad. Nothing worth while even happened at E3 anyway.
