I know, I know, Col. Crockett lacked nuance.

Unfortunately, I can only think of one politician at the national level who believes in this, and his name is Ron Paul. Every other member of Congress, and apparently every Supreme Court justice, and certainly both men running for President, speak and act as if the Federal government and its ability to write checks are the solution to all our problems.
That should be read to Congress before the start of every session.

I will only address the last paragraph since that happens to be my expertise. Every one hailed Bush's tax cuts as the greatest thing since sliced bread. At the time they should have told the citizens that these tax cuts were so that their States could raise their taxes to take over where the Fed's have to cut. No instead they were told to go out and spend it all. Ohio's Budget is now a mess, as I assume other State's are. Ohio's mess is not entirely from the fiscal irresponsibility of the State Govt. but the cuts that were never budgeted for. Unfortunately, I tried to explain this to my clients from the beginning, but they just don't get it.
Lets face. Most people just don't get it.

Seems to me that people are saying that these programs are ok, so long as they're state, not federal in nature.
I disagree, and that's not what Col. Crockett's story is saying. It says that you can't rob from Peter to give to Paul, no matter who is doing it. States still have to follow basic constitutional principles, such as life, liberty, and the persuit of happines. The 10B worth of Federal money already contributed to Katrina relief is a testament to what Crockett's story has developed in to.
Don't redistribute the same broken programs from the Feds to the states, eliminate them. Take from the people only what you need. National defense, interstate commerce (interstates primarily), and money to pay government workers, judges, etc.

I understand what you're saying.... but that's about the worst reason to not cut taxes that I've ever heard.Yes most of them are too stupid to realize the effect on themSooo... Bush's tax cuts directly resulted in state governments not balancing their budgets?
