For me, it's more about... well, yeah, I dunno. I guess I'm just jumping on the train. But the idea of a global currency without currency conversion costs is interesting.

I'm not faulting anyone. More mental gymnastics on where it might go for me. My gut tells me as long as society is stable they will be alright. If things get too sideways... I dunno.

Bitcoin is going on a bit of a roller coaster ride for now. Due to the increasing block sizes the block chain is likely to fork soon and have everyone split into two camps: traditional Bitcoin and a new version of Bitcoin that has updates to how the block chain is handled. The problem is that as Bitcoin matures transactions take longer to be processed into the block chain so they take longer to show up as verified. This isn't new information; it was built into it from the start. Bitcoin is supposed to slow down a bit as it matures so that it is more suited to larger and more stable transactions. Those that want to use Bitcoin like a digital cash for daily purchases don't want that; waiting two hours for your payment to clear for a cup of coffee is not ideal.

Another explanation of bitcoins.
Despite his opinion on them, I thought he did a decent job of breaking them down for the lay person. I'm curious what TPR thinks since he seems to be our resident expert.

BTC up to $1,650; ETH around $82.
I rebought into ETH at 35, but re-sold at 60. Sold 1/2 a BTC for $825, I paid $300/350 for the whole BTC, so still have 0.5 left.

My gut is telling me now is the time to sell.
But I'm usually wrong about this stuff and shocked it has lasted and gone as high as it has.

Yeah, impossible to know if this will go on. I did well/got lucky last time BTC broke 1000 a few years ago. Half kicking myself for not buying more ETH when it was cheap, half realizing I just wasn't going to do that.
It's not me, it's someone else.

I keep looking at bitcoin and think "but it's not based in anything real", but then I look at our stock market and US dollar and realize it hasn't been for some time either. So I guess either both can continue forever or neither can.

They have value as long as people think they do. The stock market at least is based on something tangible, even if the valuation of the individual corporations is sometimes off.
Bitcoins? That's just propped up on good feelings.

During the last boom, I managed to snag two cards. I ebay'd one for profit, mined with the other, then resold it used for $50 above new.

I saw some online graphics card dealers were charging $10,000 for orders of more than say 2. I'd like it, but I lost the article. This was trying to keep Bitcoin miners from depleting their stock.

Any clue as to why it's skyrocketing? I know Amazon has made moves to start accepting them as payment. Anything obvious other than that driving it?

They were discussing creating financial contracts (futures/swaps) etc tied to it, which people believe will drive more trading, is the most recent I've heard.
