I wonder if a short term experiment would be sufficient, or if people would have to know that it would continue in order to truly alter behaviors on it.

I think it absolutely could work, but there are two factors that need to be addressed:
1. Where does the money come from?
2. What do you do about people who live off of it rather than be employed?

1. Taxes.

2. Nothing. That's part of the point. The question (ostensibly) is whether or not social welfare/utility is increased by doing this? Do we have lower healthcare costs, better parents, fewer suicides, more GDP, whatever it is that we use to measure improvements. Do we get 10 lazy people, but 1 who creates a new invention because of this that is worth more than those 10 people would be working?

It feels like an economic perpetual motion machine.

Most people envision it as a response to a Star trek like world where robots and AI do most of our work

I just can't wrap my head around how that would work. But I think in that world, my hand crafted leather goods would fetch a premium.

Robots would do them better.

People like originals. I made a backpack/bag for my niece. She loves the bag and the fact that no one else can go buy one like it. She told me that she's always getting asked about it when she goes out.

An original robot would do it originaler :)

Joking aside, I see artisan crafts becoming an even bigger thing as we move forward.

Ditto.

Everything goes in cycles. What's old becomes new again.

Apparently the SF mayor thinks the problem is just that no one ever taught the homeless people that they shouldn't shit on the sidewalk.

The report centered around a 153-block survey of downtown San Francisco, which revealed trash on every block, 100 needles, and more than 300 piles of feces along the 20-mile stretch of streets and sidewalks.
Oh come on, what street doesn't have 15 poops per mile?

And the problem women have is that no one taught men to not rape.

Enabling mental illness.

Random stabbings are just a thing in SF apparently.

Insert commentary here about how the mental health system in this country has been almost completely disassembled.

I think most people would consider Oakland distinct from SF. All of those attacks are East Bay.
