Jesus. Apple poaches the talent from startups, launches litigation to invalidate existing patents, copies them, and then makes this statement:

“The truth, is these companies are blatantly copying our products or stifling competition by using invalid patents,” an Apple spokeswoman said. “We will continue to fight these baseless claims in court and to advance technologies on behalf of our customers and public health.”

I'd say that was pretty much Actively Evil.

Apple's new AR headset comes out in early 24 and only costs $3500!!!

What a bargain! I'm going to buy one for every family member and even one for the dog!

In contrast, the Meta Quest 2 is $300, the Meta Quest 3 will be $500, and the Meta Quest Pro that has the same features as Apple's AR will be $1000.

Which makes the line for them longer as people crave to have the Apple logo incorporated into their being.

Without admitting they did anything wrong, which is total bullshit, Apple to pay $500M for slowing down older phones.

You know what would matter and make all companies think twice about this shit?

Right? That's not even 1% of their cash on hand (~$56Bn), much less their $2.7T market cap.

I saw peeps on Reddit claiming three days ago that the "apple slowed down phones" claims were bullshit invented by the haters.

I think the original perception was "Apple slows down old things on purpose to make you buy new things."
But the reality is that they don't do that... but they do this:

The settlement pertains to a software feature Apple introduced to iOS that throttled the iPhone processor under instances of heavy loads. The idea of the feature was to reduce the negative effects of iPhone batteries aging, such as random shutdowns, for a range of iPhone models.

Ie. Old phones with worse batteries, iOS does throttle things to keep the battery in better shape.

I guess the settlement is "They didn't disclose this!" basically.

If they'd make the batteries replaceable they wouldn't have had to do that.

Except their purpose is to get you to buy a new phone.

Apparently the EU is going to force replaceable batteries in 2027 or such.

Not sure I give a fuck about the replaceable battery issue, but then again I'm not buying my own phones currently.

Also, I will never forget that the EU is forcing all manufacturers to adopt USB-C and end the proprietary connector bullshit. Yay!
