Stripping down old PC to use as a server.

Mobo does not have a monitor port.

If I remove the video card, and the only monitor ports, would I still be able to VNC into the desktop, if there is nothing there to actually render a desktop?

Unless the mobo still renders the desktop in the absence of video output... that is my question. Do I need to keep the video card in the system?

Nobody got back to me, so I pulled the video card to try it out:

Didn't work. It seemed to boot up as I had access to the networked drives, but I could not establish a VNC connection.

Yes, you will still be able to access the machine.

However, you must use a monitor to do the initial setup.

Hmmm. I've run lots of machines without monitors, but never without a video card.

I may have a spare? (Or, may have thrown them all out recently). What type of video card do you need? (What connector)

No, I had a card in it, I would just rather not have it because, for 99.9% of its remaining life, it is just going to be spinning a fan, generating heat, and using electricity.

But the mobo doesn't have a video adapter and my one experiment told me that VNC wont work without a video renderer.

Interesting.

I skipped the "remove the video card part", as like Catt, I ran a lot of PCs without monitors.

I would've tossed a coin on whether on not you could remote into it without one.

Yeah, I was in the same boat.

I'm not even 100% sure I did my experiment correctly. Only tried once and the system sort of locked and of course I couldn't see what was happening so I just powered down and threw the card back in.

Yeah, without a video card, it doesn't know what to do. I'm guessing that it won't boot without, period.

You should be able to buy some $5 video card that doesn't need a fan because it's so old and shitty you could put in there.

Thought about that too. Might do it next time I order something else from newegg.
