Why is it that no matter where I work, the DB folk have some SQL skill, but little to no experience actually designing a goddamn DB correctly?

Generally, DBAs are to DBs as OS administrators are to OSes. They keep it running. They're plumbers/mechanics, not architects.

I ran into the same trap again and again. So I had to learn to design my own DBs as a developer, then later I learned to be a DBA too.

We're hiring DB admins and DB devs.
