Netscape Navigator Dead
Heh... I saw someone bitching about MS bundling IE with their OS (still) and crying about how unfair that was. One lady that doesn't post often but nearly gives me an erection every time she does asked how they were supposed to download the browser of their choice if Windows doesn't install with a browser to begin with.
Made me chuckle.

Do you really think the people that are bitching about how unfair it is for MS to have IE already installed are going to find THAT acceptable. Nothing less than having the install files included with Windows will work for them.GORDON wrote:Buy a CD with Firefox on it?

I'm just thinking of the AOL days when you couldn' go to the grocery store without seeing a case full of free AOL cd's.
It isn't impossible to get them to the masses. Or, more likely, just include a cd with both firefox and ie from the manufacturer, which is how most peeps buy pcs, and let the consumer decide with nothing preloaded. Just label the CD, "Microsoft make IE. Most information tech professionals prefer firefox. You decide."

I've just always thought the pissing and moaning about it was stupid. It's easy enough to download and use something else. I've used the Mac OS and Linux and they both come with a preloaded browser. But somehow only Microsoft is evil for having preloaded apps.
I have nothing against Firefox other than the fact that they've partnered up with Google whom I loathe. I use Firefox at work and it does what I need it to do (except it doesn't work with the Ciscoworks web interface for some reason). At home I use IE 7.

I think it just a brick in the "Microsoft has market dominance, and gets to pressure manufacturers to not include other options" wall.
As I've said before and no one really disagreed, Microsoft operating systems become "dominant" so fast because they are microsoft, and they get to dictate to the manufacturers how it is going to be, not because they necessarily have a superior product.
I guess the embedded IE argument is just a way to be an annoyance to microsoft. It isn't like anything is going to change "within the lifetime of 2 cats."

Interesting "way back" article on the beginning of the end for Netscape.
