Can an 802.11b computer connect to an 802.11g router?

Yes.

Some 802.11g's will go into compatibility mode, however, and cause all devices (even g's) to connect at b-like speeds.

I'd say it depends on the router. I have an older laptop and I can NOT get it to connect to my parent's wireless, yet the new Dell hops right on with no problems.

Ha.

I just bypassed one router's wireless encryption by physically attaching another router to it and... connecting to THAT router's wireless.

I've found that if you have a problem connecting via wireless, try physically connecting to the router first, then unplug the cable. That has worked a few times with older stuff here.

I hate wireless as an IT guy. 90% of the calls I've received this year from remote sales people are wireless related.

Amen. Wireless makes shit way more complicated than it theoretically should be.
