I can reinstall windows and delete the partitions and I am still having problems.

Originally I everything would work fine until I did the first windows update and then after the restart I would be told that my PC didn't shut down properly and that I can continue to boot normally or use safe mode. If I choose normal it just reboots itself shows the motherboard screen and then gives the same safe mode message.

The only way I was able to get online or have it work kind of normally was to boot in safe mode with networking. Even then I wasn't able to do any more window updates. I would get an error message trying to get the updates. This was using dsl.

So I took the PC to my parents deleted everything and then reintalled windows and then used there cable modem and I was able to download all updates and reboot and not have any issues.

I brought the PC home and I installed my dsl stuff and everything ran fine. I turned off the PC and went out. I came home a powered it up and I am getting the same message and I can only run in safe mode.

I didn't do alot of test when connected to the cable modem but I reboot a few times and no problems but after connecting to the dsl I get a bunch of issues.

Any idea why this is happening?

When you say "install the DSL stuff" do you mean that you're installing some software your ISP gave you?

Many ISPs give their customers disks with software when they sign up with their service, but those disks are worthless. You don't need them. Usually, it contains firewall, anti-spyware, anti-spam, etc. software. Plus, it usually makes some sort of configuration to your PC to make sure your home page is something on your ISP's site and maybe some additional icons or programs featuring your ISP.

Contrary to what they may tell you, you do NOT need that software installed to connect via your cable, DSL, or even your dial up.

I still have a hard time explaining to some people, "AOL/Earthlink is NOT the internet... you don't need their software..."

I've always said AOL is "Internet for Dummies."

I knew AOL users who had never gotten onto the internet despite logging into AOL daily. They simply had no idea that AOL wasn't the web.

I wasn't having any luck getting it going until I used the installer disc.

I skip and uncheck all there helpful firewall and there own personal brower bullshit though.
