A little help?
I'm a week into the trial and have been logged on 24/7 to train skills. I've completed all the first agent's missions and have completed a mission by a second agent that was labeled "storyline", but that was the only one that agent gave me.
Where do I need to go to advance the storyline and/or make some real cash?

heh, btw, skills still train when you're logged off.
What? Son of a bitch. I would log my PC into EVE and then fire up my laptop so I could still surf the web. I would train a skill right before bed that would be timed to be done in the morning, then train another one to be done around the time I get home.
Oh well. You can't say I haven't tried in this game.
P.S. I'd still like some tips as to where I should be going to get missions. I walk through the Caldari missions I'm being given. I can't find anyone with higher level missions who will talk to me. I mean, should I just randomly fly around until I finally find someone who will talk to me?

Do a search for the Spacelane patrol corp. Then find the highest quality lvl 1 agent you can. Lvl 1 missions are utterly pussy if you're in a decent Merlin. Hell, they're still fairly pussy if you're not. I got a Bantam frigate you can have if you want it. Soon, as you can, get out of the frigate & upgrade to a destroyer, cruiser, interceptor, or assault ship. Then you can start tackling lvl 2s.What? Son of a bitch. As for missions, there's a lvl 1 quality 19 agent where I operate from now & a lvl 1 quality 17 wasn't far away.

• Activate the register "Agents."
• Click on the downward arrow next to the division you'd like to work for.
• Click on the info icon for the last agent listed as "Available to you."
• Check the agents location against your location in the map.
• If the agent is too far away, check the agent listed above that one or try a different division/corporation.
• Travel to meet your agent.

I want to operate near our HQ, and couldn't find a good Spacelane agent close enough to suit my tastes, so I tried a different approach. I went station-hoping in the HQ system and the three next to it, and found plenty of good agents around that way. None are Spacelane, but the good standing I had with Spacelane I also have with all these other guys, too. Not sure if that's just the way it works or if I've accidently trained a skill to help with that, but there you go.

So I switched from a Lvl 1 - quality 18 agent to a Lvl 1 - quality 19 agent and nothing has changed.
I still get the same shitty little missions with the same shitty little rewards.

Sorry Catt, that was a typo and I fixed it.
I have not yet gone to a level 2 agent. All were unavailable to me that I came across until I did the search thing and I noticed several were out there. But if you look above, Malcolm was advising me to stick with the level 1 agents. (Unless he did a similar typo.)
If that's all that needs to be done, cool. My inability to find one would explain why I'm not making any progress with cash.

Level II is quite a step above Level I. But there are some Level IIs that do currier missions, which aren't more deadly but rather longer. You can step up to Level IIs that way if you want to, but it's hardly more exciting.

Well, my Merlin has an Ion Blaster, a railgun, a small missle turret, and a slot for another weapon that I haven't filled because I haven't need to.
I've got some reinforced armor, an armor repairer, and two shield repairer or rechargers, whatever.

Some of the level two missions hit HARD. So, just be aware of that. I do them easily with my Caracal. Strange thing is, same ship/equipment, when I first started level 2's, they were kicking my ass. Now I run through them easily and have started level 3's. So far, that's working out for me. However, I did dump one mission that Troy said would be very hard/impossible for me to do. Key with the caracal is to keep distance. I often spend the whole mission running away from the pack of monsters and kill what I can reach.
With your gun load out, you have to get close. So, not sure how that's gonna work out. However, you have an armor repairer along with shield booster. I only run with a shield booster. How does your capacitor hold out? I eat through mine pretty quick and have been using a cap booster when things got bad so I could keep my shield booster running.

That'll blast thru any lvl 1s that're thrown your way. I've also noticed little difference in quality of reward or difficulty among lvl 1 agents of varying quality. Just suck up to them till a lvl 2 agent will talk to you.Well, my Merlin has an Ion Blaster, a railgun, a small missle turret, and a slot for another weapon that I haven't filled because I haven't need to.

As Cake mentioned, either go for armor repping or shield repping.
IF you go armor, put a energy recharger, battery ex in your mid slots. This will make the shield repair go for a longer time.
If you go Shields, put Power Diagnostic Units in your low slots. Same principle as before but the shield booster will last longer.
