Dying Light: The Beast

A stand alone free expansion for owners of...I don't know? Maybe DL2?
There is a full game here, but compared to DL and DL2, I'd call it DL:Lite. That's not a knock, those games are just so damn huge.
If you ever wondered about the DL series, this would be a good sampler. You don't need to have played those games if you're just looking for a good zombie game, but the story absolutely requires you to have played them.
This is set after DL2. You're playing as Kyle Crane, the protagonist of DL. You escape from a facility where you've been a prisoner and guinea pig for years. You find yourself in Castor Woods seeking revenge.
All the familiar gameplay is here. Although, I believe the difficulty is amped ever so slightly. I think the zombies are just a bit tougher, and the Volatiles certainly are MUCH tougher. They also add the driving from the DL expansion and it works well. (Let me help you with that: "V" to change to third person view.)
Dark zones are easier than before, and it can be attributed to the exclusion of Volatiles from them. The zones are mostly smaller than the other games, but they do replace the Volatiles with a new zombie. This one is basically a Volatile in a straight jacket. If he sees you, he screams nonstop until killed. The screams attract endless virals. It's clear they wanted you to focus more on stealth in the dark zones, and it works.
There is a pretty massive logic flaw in the story and it makes me wonder if they had different teams setting up missions. There's a side mission where another escaped guinea pig uses [REDACTED} and it goes very badly. Meanwhile, in the primary story, that same thing is used with zero negative effects. Somebody wasn't looking too closely at their story board...
Overall, the story is tight and sets up DL3. I believe there was a hierarchy set among the protagonists here, but I think there was a missed opportunity. Some dark shit happens late, and I think I would have gone a different way. But the way they did do this does give them some options in the future.
Unbelievable content for free.
A must play for fans of the DL series, and if you're not playing it. Do you even game?
