Abigail (2024)

As long as we recognize Lucas is washed up and most TV sucks, we'll all get along fine.

This looks fun.

M3GAN, I mean Abigail, looks like a really fun movie. I'm in.

That one guy looked like Elon Musk.

So much so that I was thinking how awesome it must be to know that someday you'll be in line for a biopic that will get you award buzz.

There's another trailer but avoid it because they're starting to give away plot points and cool moments.

It's fun, but as I'm sure you guessed, not a thinking man's movie. A bit slower than I expected, with far more character strokes than action.

Alisha Weir steals the movie. She is excellent. In fact, in terms of acting, the cast is pretty solid. Elon Musk lookalike, Kevin Durand and Kathryn Newton, particularly shine among the kidnapping crew. Props to Dan Stevens too who is given the most to work with and clearly had fun. Angus Cloud (RIP - suicide from what I've been told) made me immediately dislike him, which is to his credit because he was easily the most unlikeable in the crew. William Catlett was just there. He was fine, but his character had very little to do.

Giancarlo Esposito is wasted here just because he's not given enough to do, and his voice really threw me for a loop after listening to him talk the last month or so while playing Far Cry 6.

There are problems with the writing. They kind of rewrite vampires a bit to either fit their plot or because they didn't bother looking up the mythology of vampires. That results in some confusion for an audience trained on 100 years of set vampire rules.

It's pretty light on horror. I think there are more jokes than jump scares. It also only gets gory when one specific thing happens, but it's pretty funny at the same time.

Recommended.

The following contains spoilers that were in the trailers. Which were a lot. So read at your peril.

1. It's too bad that they spoiled the twist right in the trailers, because they had an opportunity for a "From Dusk Til Dawn" moment for a new generation. The vampire rules were nearly the same, as well. Minor changes could have made them identical. I once said out loud, "Psychos don't explode when sunlight hits them, I don't care how fucking crazy they are." Seth Gecko walking in the door at the end would have made me yell out loud.

2. That being said, somehow my kid hadn't heard of this movie, and hadn't seen the trailer, so he went in fresh. I got to enjoy the twist reveal through him. He suspected the girl was the bad guy, but didn't see the vampire thing coming.

3. Since I knew the twist ahead of time, I could watch it from that perspective and pretty much had the movie figured out as soon as Gus Fring introduced them to the house, 12 minutes in. That's too bad. It's a shame when they give away way too much in the trailers. The "there's a fully stocked bar" was an especially stupid element if they were supposed to be a professional crew alert and on a job, and nailed down my predictions.

4. They really, really liked the stylized stuff in M3GAN.

There is a real problem in Hollywood with companies who do trailers ruining movies.
