Honestly, the middle east is where the fact that young women often make life-alteringly bad decisions when left to their own devices.... flourishes in rules like "no single women allowed out without a male family member." You know that wasn't based on misogyny, but these women kept coming home pregnant due to rape, or "but i loved him," and then their family gets saddled with supporting the single mother and bastard child. So "not allowed out alone to make your poor choices like walking down the really fun looking rape alley."
Plus cutting the hands off of thieves.
