Total Annihilation - Greatest RTS ever
Well, you said TA was a step back, but I think TA is superior to AoE 2 because of many of my complaints. So I found it odd that you said that.
AoE 2 wasn't a horrible thing to give me. It's a horrible thing to make me play.
KIDDING! I'm just not getting the hang of it. I keep wanting it to be like the better RTS's that we have played and it's not. I'd be ok with playing it at times. But I know it will never be one that I master or have a chance of winning. I was able to get better when I picked through your sarcasm and tried the parts of your responses that were constructive. But I've got such a long way to go before I'm competitive.
BUT, back to TA. Just played some games. Started with easy AI. I totally forgot how to start building and immediately had resource issues. Took a few minutes, but I got that under control. Decided to send a small squad out to investigate the enemy base. I ended up destroying the whole thing. Bumped it up to Medium AI and started again. Managed the resources wrong again, but did much better. The enemy hit my base with a small scout squad and I took them out pretty quickly. Sent my remaining units to scout and won the game again with them. Switched to Hard. MUCH better with my resource management and was far more productive. Enemy scouted my base a couple of times with small squads. Held them off easily and collected their metal. Once I have my resources very solidly under control and had the infrastructure to pump out massive amounts of units, I scouted their base. Took it out completely very easily. Time to go against 3+ hard AI and/or human opponents.
It was very funny watching the game start. Resets your colors way down, making the desktop on my second monitor look like 256 color VGA. But, I was able to set the res in the game to monitor native. That made the mini map EXTREMELY small and pretty much unusable. But the game looked good with crisp graphics. Funniest thing of all was when I launched the game. Remember all those bars that would fill up as the game loaded? Well, BAM, loaded. You barely see that screen.
All the sounds and warning bells, etc. Brought back good memories.

Epic battle against 3 allied hard AI. I was turtling for a while letting them build up. One of them started hitting me early, and kept hitting me. But never very hard. I was able to hold them off and made good use of the metal they were leaving behind. Then some big artillery started hitting the perimeter of my base and units outside my base. I had to make that stop NOW, of course. I started sweeping squads of units looking for the big guns. I couldn't find them and it was starting to hurt. I rush the bottom left corner of the map (opposite of mine) and took a ton of stuff with me, but never made it to the main base. While building up another army, the artillery started again. Was taking out all of my outside defenses. Took the army I had and went to the upper left of the map. Was making good time into their base and doing a ton of damage. Found their commander and took him out. Sent the left overs and all my new units down to the lower right corner. That wave died, built up and sent a second. That wave took out that commander.
So it was down to yellow. He started expanding quickly into the cleared out map areas. I had to keep running patrols to push him back to his corner. As I approached the unit cap of 250 units, I sent my army to his corner. Did a ton of damage on the way, but when I got close to his base, he had an impenetrable wall of rounds chewing up anything I sent his way. Wave after wave of units were getting chewed up before I could even see what was hitting me. Was going to need air units.
Created a bomber squad to take out hard hitting targets as my ground units tried to enter their base. Sent another army. Included more fast units that would just rush in as spotters. Found some Berthas in there. Sent my bomber squad to take out that target. RRRRIIIIPPPPP. My bomber squad was chewed up before the Bertha was in sight. With the next assault, I had about triple the bombers in the squad. This time, I took out two Berthas sitting next to each other. But, my bombers were chewed up immediately. Expensive exchange for me, I think. A couple more times of this, and I'm making ZERO progress. So, I queued up some nuke launchers. Really wanted to win without using them, but, I couldn't get in there.
Built one more army and sent everything in there. The ground units, once again, weren't putting a dent into the base. So I gathered up the bombers and made a blind run on a spot a little bit into their base hoping to take out some of the big guns holding me out. They roll in, exploding everywhere, then BOOOOOOMMMMMMM. I had managed to blind shot their commander.
2.5 hour battle. Couple thousand units lost/killed on each side.

If you are still wondering about gog. I have used them before and never had any issues. Mainly I have just picked up free games from them but bought some of the Wing Commander games during a sale.

After having to wait by my PC for people to play with so many times, I finally uninstalled and put the game in storage thinking we were done with it. You can't install it out of the blue after 7 years and expect me to be at your becking call. You can't stand me up for 7 years, then all of the sudden claim it's MY fault we aren't playing. You had your chance. Now you will have to wait for me.
Or for it to be $5 on Steam so I can buy it again.

If I don't own SC2, I'd grab it for RTS multi, knowing I'm going to get my ass kicked.
I was never as good at the resources as you guys.

Just looked and I own it.
It's also on sale for $5, and the one DLC is $1.99.
