Interview from many years ago reveals potential confession.
This was him discussing what he'd do "hypothetically":
Simpson said, “I think Charlie had followed [Goldman] in, and he brought the knife. As things got heated, I just remember Nicole fell and hurt herself, and [Goldman] kind of got into a karate thing, and I said, ‘Well, do you think you can kick my ass?’ And I remember I grabbed the knife, I do remember that portion, taking the knife from Charlie. And to be honest, after that I don’t remember what happened after that except that I’m standing there and there’s all kind of stuff around.”

BTW, whenever I see RIH I always default to "Rot in Hell". I don't know who came up with this "Rest in Heaven" bullshit, but I would absolutely believe someone did it to excuse using RIH meaning Rot in Hell and it caught on.
