I saw that posted on facebook, and the dude was getting a mixture of love/hate.... hate mostly from the people using/or had used those programs. I can positively say that when I lived in the back woods of North Carolina, and were expecting a baby, and we were looking into all of our local options for getting part of the cost of delivery paid for (had Insurance but fuckit, free government money, right?), the county health board person, off the record, suggested that I "move out" of my home because single mothers get way more bennies. That pissed my wife off and she dimed the person out.
Just saying.

Sometimes I don't believe the Snopes folks write from an unbiased stance. Some of their explanations seem to be more spin than fact. I'm not saying that's the case here, just an overall feeling I get when reading some of their stuff.
But after skimming, allow me to squash a point or two they've made:
The Department of Agriculture (under which the program operates) estimates a total annual program “loss” of about four percent.
1. That's an estimate.
2. How many times do we have to see a governmental agency completely miss the mark on its estimates before we stop believing their estimates?
3. Food stamps are commonly used to buy non-food items, so I'd argue there's more abuse than they admit.
For starters, one cannot simply declare herself to be mentally ill or have back problems, then sit back and collect disability payments for the rest of her (working) life.
While the concept behind what they're saying is correct if you believe the government's marketing, this is essentially bullshit. My dad owns a business that does pre-employment screenings and worker's comp fraud. I've seen what these folks do to fake persistent injuries and avoid detection. This is not as hard as Snopes is making it out to be. An equivalent statement would be: "Marijuana is illegal and the war on drugs has made it very difficult to come by. Having a lifetime habit would be very difficult to maintain."
That all being said, I do agree with them that the post itself stretched the numbers. I mean, that's why I asked about it because I figured they were stretched. But we all know people live off the government tit their entire lifetime. Remember how Katrina displaced families made up of 5 generations of people who had never worked?
