I got zero background on Mr. McStabby. For all I know, he deserves paralysis and worse because he up and knifed his friend in the spine one day. On the flip side, maybe McStabby stabbed his buddy over some other bullshit dispute they or their families had. Maybe McStabby's buddy raped his sister or screwed him out of money and knows the right people in town to get away with it.
