I feel like this topic has to come up when you discuss a team changing ownership. Panthers in Charlotte have been pretty successful though, and have basically been printing money for years now. It'd be an absurd business decision, especially considering how much it's going to cost...
The team has sold-out all but two home games in it's history. Riding a 157 game sellout streak as of last weekend. Lots of local sponsorship, two states (even if they aren't like NY-level media markets) worth of territory and fans. YOUNG fans, 20-30 year olds who grew up Carolina fans are the die-hard base. A couple of easy-to-market players (Cam, Kuechly, CMC). And the current team up for bid is very competitive. Superbowl trip and winning the division more often than not in the past 5-6 years.
The sale is going to break the record on team valuation. Diddy doesn't have enough money, IMO(only $800m net worth). It's going to take a 30% stake of a $3+ Billion winning bid. So the qualified owner is someone who can cut a check for $1.0B, by themselves, not including their partners.
Consensus by the fans so far is that the Belk or Dollar Tree families who already have minority stakes will step in for the rest. They have the billions required.

How'd I come up with the $3B valuation? The last NFL team for sale was the Bills. They were pre-valued at $900M, but billionare's love an NFL team, so it ended up going for $1.4B at auction.
Forbes values the Panthers pre-sale at $2.4B. And Charlotte>Buffalo for a bunch of reasons I don't need to go into.

The moving thing is, as you said, something that just naturally gets brought up.
There is precedent though... Remember, the Supersonics were moved out of Seattle to Oklahoma City at the whim of their new owner.
Got to respect the man for standing by his word and for tying it into a charity for the city.

I found that to be very interesting as rumors earlier in the day had Gruden going back to the Bucs. Could have just been his annual stirring of the rumor mill to get a raise.
