Football could absolutely be in trouble, but it more doubtful than not.
First of all, let's look at that parallel to boxing. He neglects to mention that boxing destroyed itself thanks to rampant corruption. Why did Tyson never fight George Foreman? (Hint: Because his handlers knew of all the heavyweights, Foreman wouldn't be scared, could take Tyson's punches, was the hardest hitter in boxing, and his style was the perfect counter to a shorter fight that liked to fight inside.) Why did Mayweather never fight the best boxers until after their primes? Marciano's 49-0 was legit. He didn't fight layups and he didn't take years off to heal. Mayweather's fights were boring because he just ran and counter punched. A legit style, yes, but hardly entertaining.
Teddy also fails to mention that boxing's audience was stolen by MMA, a more violent sport...
Secondly, and this one cannot be ignored, yet it is constantly, and that's the players don't care. Whether it's for the love of the game or the love of money, the vast majority of players don't give a fuck. You know why so many people try hard core drugs? Because they don't think addiction or overdoses apply to them. People, particularly men in their teens and 20s, believe themselves to be invincible.
Third, football isn't just the biggest sport in the country, it's a fucking religion. Raise taxes. Take our guns. However, you try to outlaw football and there will be a new revolution. There's too much public investment in football. Too much money being made.
I think what is far, far more likely than football disappearing is all youth leagues will turn into no contact or flag football.
Hitting will start probably around high school. Perhaps even sophomore or junior year, so freshman football would still be no contact. All that hitting will be in game though. Schools will likely be limited to a certain number of practices where hitting can occur, and those will be during two-a-days, and not during the regular season.
Truth be told, this is a good problem for humanity. There is so much money and it's so popular that the motivation is there to find solutions. "Necessity is the mother of invention."
Hopefully, this all leads to solutions for head trauma, and honestly, if people are concerned about such things, they should want football to continue. If they kill football, they kill all funding for solutions.
